Okay food, nice ambience (we liked Gruene River Grill better)

The view is the real draw to this place. The outdoor patios on the river are great. Our service was also good, but the food was less than stellar. The queso dip tasted like it was just one of those pre-made Velveeta dip blocks melted down. I had fried catfish and fries, and the catfish was over-fried (almost couldn't taste the meat of the fish inside). The fries are round-cut, which is interesting, but they weren't very well seasoned. My husband's catfish was the same as mine, although his onion rings were quite tasty. Overall, the food was just okay. Maybe would be better for lunch with just a sandwich? Again, the river view is great, but that's the high point.
- Pros: Ambience -- river view is great!
- Cons: Food is just okay.
Good steaks and that's about it.

After hearing about the Gristmill from my co-worker, after we moved to San Marcos, we ate at the Gristmill on our first weekend.
Service was very good - but they were very crowded and hard to hear one another talk at the table.
The food - not a huge selection, but they did have a mainly large beef menu.
The meat was good - but IMHO not as great as some other people have stated.
Maybe I was expecting a WOW type factor, but no, just a very good meal.
Was it worth it...maybe...but I found something better and it is only a few hundred yards up the street...Gruene River Grill...more selection of food and I felt it had better tasting food.
But don't take my word for it...go do both restaurants and you decide.
- Pros: View of the river and the steaks are just okay for me.
- Cons: Not a large selection of food and the taste was average.
