Tips for Becker Animal Hospital

February 11, 2013

IF YOU WANT SAFE, RELIABLE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR PETS ILLNESS, DO NOT TAKE THEM HERE!!!!!! This place is terrible!!! There are so many bad reviews of this place for a reason! STAY AWAY!

Here is what happended when we took our dog there:

Our dog became very ill with diarrhea and we were worried he may have ingested something dangerous. It was 9 pm on a Sunday, so we couldn't take him to our vet and felt that he needed help immediately. When we arrived at Becker with our dog, the place was completely empty of ANY other customers. Despite NO other customers being present, we waited in the lobby for 20 minutes and in a "private room" for another 40 minutes before seeing ANYONE. Our dog was shaking and very sick at this point, and we made it VERY clear to the staff that we needed help ASAP. Nothing. When the doctor finally came in, she was only with our pet for 10 minutes and then left. The technician came in 10 minutes later and explained the doctor's so- called treatment plan and tests that she had recommended. We consented to the $200 treatment plan because we love our dog and were very worried about him. Because we had waited so long and our dog had had an accident in his carrier, I asked that he be bathed and the carrier be cleaned. The techinician said they would do so. Before the technician left with our dog to run the recommended tests, get him cleaned up, etc., I asked him how long it would take to do all of that. He said "20 minutes". The technician took our dog to the back and we waited another 40 minutes without a word from anyone. Finally, my fiance got up, walked to the front desk, and found the technician sitting there on the computer. When my fiance asked him about our dog, he replied "Um yeah, let me see what's up with that...". Seriously? Our dog is very sick and you can't even come update us as to why he's been gone so long? Finally, we were allowed to speak to the vet again, and she VERY BRIEFLY AND FLIPPANTLY stated what was wrong with our dog and that he "just needed medication". She did not explain what precautions we needed to take from preventing our other dog from getting sick, how to administer the meds, etc. She just brushed us off and we were again left waiting in the exam room. After another 15 minutes, a different technician came in with the medications and our dog. Our dog had not been cleaned WHATSOEVER! He still had the accident all over him! I was horrified by this and wanted to get out of there ASAP. When I asked the technician who gave us the medications if he had already been given his daily dosage for that day she said "I don't know". She had no idea if we needed to give him his meds as soon as we got him home or if he had already had them!!!! How dangerous is that!?! So, at my prompting, she went and asked if he had already been given them. He had not. Then, as we were trying to leave and pay our bill, NO ONE was at the front counter to receive our payment. We had to wait another 10 minutes for anyone to show up and take our money.

To top it all off, when we got home I researched the condition the vet had stated our dog had...Only to find out it is highly contagious and transimitable to both other dogs and humans!!!!!!!! To help prevent transmission, all the different sites I read stated to immediately BATHE the sick dog and wash/ disinfect all toys/ bedding/ bowls/ etc. HOW COULD THE VET NOT TELL US THAT?? By not giving us all the information, she put both us and our other dog in harms way. And why didn't they bathe our dog like we had asked them to do? TERRIBLE! Just terrible.

PET LOVERS BEWARE!!! This place and it's so called "vets" do not care about you or your animals' safety! Go someplace else!

My post was deleted. I took my beagle in March 2011 because I suspected that he had gotten out of our yard and was hit by a vehicle. I thought this because I had left my home to run errands and was gone for approx. 3 hours. Before I left, my beagle was running around and jumping off the hot tub and chasing squirrels, etc. When I returned home 3 hours later, he was in my patio standing stiffly and breathing very shallow rapid breaths. He was so stiff he didn't want to walk or move. I noticed he had a couple of cuts on his back and he was very dirty, so I immediately took him to this hospital. BIG MISTAKE!!! Dr. Okafur assessed him and ordered an x-ray that was immediately done. She came back into the examination room and accused my partner and I of neglecting our pet. She stated that he had a bad case of pneumonia and that we had waited too long to seek care for him. Perplexed, I asked her how it was possible for my dog to develop pneumonia in 3 hours. I explained to her that my beagle had nothing wrong with him that day as evidenced by him eating breakfast and dinner, running around throughout the day in our yard, chasing squirrels and jumping on to and off of our hot tub. I told her again that I suspected that he must have gotten out of our yard and injured because he was fine just three hours ago. All of this information fell on Dr. Okafur's deaf ears because she was not listening and maintained that my dog had a bad case of pneumonia and that we waited too long to seek treatment. She recommended we leave him overnight so that he could have antibiotics, IV fluid, etc. and of course we did. We went home confused and concerned and worried that our baby was very sick. The next morning I showed up and met with a different Vet. Dr. Volosen told me that my beagle's pneumonia was getting better and so on. I then asked him how it was possible that my beagle would have acquired pneumonia in 3 hours and went through the whole explanation about my pet's behavior earlier that day and the wounds that I noticed and more importantly, that I suspected he got injured. Dr. Volosen listened and then rechecked the xray and came back and told me that indeed, my beagle had been probably hit by a car because the xray showed he had 7 ribs broken!!! He also stated that the "pneumonia" was actually fluid build-up from the injury. He altered my beagle's treatment and I requested that my beagle get pain medication which he completely agreed and he ordered an immediate dose. It is because of him that my pet FINALLY received the proper treatment. I spent over a thousand dollars getting him better which I don't regret. HOWEVER, Dr. Okafur NEVER apologized or even acknowledged her mistake, and that is why I will NEVER bring my pets here EVER again. Apparently, she has misdiagnosed more animals since my experience in 2011...get her out of there!

I took my cat to Becker Animal Hospital after business hours because he developed a bad case of diarrhea and was lethargic. I waited four and a half hours to see a vet. When we finally got seen I was told I needed tests and IV fluids and an overnight stay besides x rays and meds. The bill came out to almost $750.00. My cat did get better but 4 days later had to be taken back because now it was sneezing horribly. It had developed an upper respiratory infection which I am certain it contracted there. I saw there were other sick cats that night when I went back to the holding area to see my cat's xrays. ( I doubt hands get washed between patients and employees were handing pets off to owners and then touching incoming pets right after.)That visit ended up costing $128.00 for 2 shots and 7 pills. Now my other cat (both of are indoor cats) is sneezing and I am sure has the same upper respiratory tract infection. I will not be taking my animals back there any time soon.

I went to the Becker Animal Hospital for the first time after 5pm for my 10 year old large dog who had a swollen red eye that was forming a ball under it. They put us into a waiting room right away and we waited for about 20 minutes til the doctors came in. My dog was very comfortable with them the minute the doctors walked in. Both Dr. Youssef and Dr. Killi were extremely understanding and fully examined my dog's eye. Both of the doctors took such great care of my dog as if it was their own dog. They provided an estimate of the costs up front and fully explained all the tests they would conduct and how long it could take. They did a thorough eye exam with medicine which was roughly $150 and also gave him his annual shots for about $60. My dog has recovered dramatically in 1 day since it was related to allergies. My dog is extremely happy and himself again. I think I found a new animal hospital. Their prices are excessively affordable and the place is very nice and clean. I have to take my dog in for a follow up exam soon and I know my dog and I look forward to the next visit and future visits.

I have been a client of Dr. Becker’s for over 10 years. In that time I have ALWAYS received excellent service and my pets have received excellent care. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the doctors are compassionate and well-trained. I love my pets dearly and wouldn’t trust them to anyone who I felt adequately equipped to care for them. Dr. Becker, Volosen, and Carter are awesome and I would recommend Becker Animal Hospital to my friends and family with no reservations.

Problem is boarding. Love the cameras but have had several problems like them forgetting to give meds forgetting to let them go to doggy daycare etc. I am planning on trying once more only because they are the only place in SA with cams.
