The Mission
If any performance company was born to be filed and searchable under such a title, it's Jump-Start. Dedicated to bringing together artists of diverse mediums, ethnicities and approaches, Jump-Start specializes in collaboration with a purpose.
In Action
Performances hosted at the theater often have local roots and almost always raise questions on the status of society, which often means race, youth and gender issues. The theater relies on a permanent company of both performing and non-performing artists; this pocketful of young, in-house wonders has included the likes of Sterling Houston and resident moves maven S.T. Shimi, whose dance work evokes hip swivels from even the least coordinated of San Antonians. Presentations have included the annual Young Tongues Festival, a two-week-ish series of pieces crafted by artists under 30, "Women of Ill Repute REFUTE," an evening of spoken word on the lives of San Antonio females, and "Pocho," a commentary on growing up Tejano.
Jump Start Jumps!. A wonderful venue for exciting and interesting programs. Dance, spoken word, performance art are just some of the great shows here. Don't miss an opportunity to see any performance, they are all innovative and top notch. Also check out the WIPs, the last Wendsdays of each month for glimpses of Works In Progress...
