Slow Service, Poor quality Steak – My wife and I were in town for a meeting. We decided on Republic of Texas because I wanted Steak.
The young waiter was nice enough, and we were seated promptly, We placed our orders and waited. It took close to an hour for our food, which looked like it was sitting for a while. Our waiter didn't bring us any silverware. My wife finally had to get up and go get us some silverware. The Steak was fatty and tough. I expected Steak in Texas to be much better. I don't know when I'll come back to San Antonio, but when I do, I won't be eating at the Republic of Texas!!!
Get the Akaushi burger – After a dismal dinner the night before we were hoping for a good burger and fries. What we got was the best burger we've ever had!
After being seated right by the river our waitress Julie came out immediately and took our drink orders. While we looked over the menu we had our first round of drinks and Julie checked on us periodically, never hurrying us. I asked about the buffalo burger versus the Akaushi and she said "get the Akaushi, it's the best burger, I won't eat a burger anywhere else" She even commented that a previous diner loved the burger so much that he ordered another one! After that kind of recommendation what else could we order? I ordered mine medium rare, my boyfriend's was medium. The meat melted in our mouths. It was so good we took off all the condiments (lettuce, tomato, and pickles) and just ate with the bun, onions, and cheese! Needless to say we were pleasantly surprised! The burger came with fries or onion petals, both great! We ordered the potato skins to start and they were good as well. I was impressed to see Shiner Black on the menu it's one of my favorites. While not a margarita drinker my boyfriend didn't have any complaints about his.
We will definitely be coming back for that burger!
worth a shot – This was the first stop to eat on the Riverwalk during our Xmas vacation. Being hungry and the first place we passed as we descended the stairs to the river level, it could have turned out iffy - but it was fun sitting outside, the ducks were a constant amusement and the food was good. A few in the party had hamburgers, I tried their bbq brisket sliders (the name appealed to me as a Chicagoan who grew up on White Castle sliders). I loved the brisket sauce. One rice dish was a little too salty and one entree (tortilla soup and chicken salad sandwich was good) but came late (we had our food a good 5 min. before). They were extremely busy, so considering that, the meal was good. There were other restaurants to try during the remaining vacation, so we did not return, but if other places are crowded and you want a middle of the road meal - stop by.
Good atmosphere, bad food – We stopped by the restaurant late (around 11 pm) on a Wednesday. After we were sat by a very friendly host, the server proceeded to scold him for sitting her so late. She immediately told us it was last call for drinks and that the kitchen was closing so we needed to put our orders in immediately. This was very reasonable considering the late hour. She was also nice and polite in the way she told us. We ordered some chicken quesadillas, potato skins, and a chicken cordon blue sandwich. About 6 minutes later, the food came out which was very suspect. The quesadilla was okay as I believe it was the most difficult to mess up. The potato skins were obviously frozen and had not been cooked long enough as their middles were still cool to cold. They also were very shy on the cheese and bacon on the skins. The worst of the three was by far the sandwich. The chicken had been cooked long before it made it to my sandwich. It was both dry and cold. Overall the food was really lousy and I wish that they had just said the kitchen was closed instead of rushing it. The waitress was nice and filled our drinks often. She dropped the check in a timely manor and even suggested the we go into the bar at the restaurant and have a drink which surprised me because she had told us it was last call almost 40 minutes before. The seating was great, right on the water but then again many of the other places around there have seating just as nice so I would recommend skipping this place and checking out one of them.
Would not recommend to anyone! – This restaurant had by far the worst service I have ever had. I went there with a couple friends thinking it would be fun. We waited thirty minutes for a table, which was not a big deal until we were seated next to three empty tables. Still not too bad until I had to request a waitress after about fifteen minutes or so. The food was not bad, but not excellent by far. We were going to have a some drinks after dinner, but the waitress brought our ticket right after we finished eating. Then, when she brought back our cash and cards, she kept asking us if were going to tip her. ??? I would not recommend this place to anyone!
Definately not worth it! – Me and a friend went to this restaurant the other day, expecting a great meal, and it was so far from that. He ordered a T Bone steak, which resembled a pork chop and wasnt good at all, especially for 20 bucks. I ordered beef quesadillias which was disgusting. It consisted of ground meat , which was tasteless, and the cheese which was gloppy. The sour cream was melted, since it probably sat there for about 20 mins. The only good thing was, the margaritas. The service was very poor, was hard getting a refill on our drinks, and we waited for more than a half hour to get our meals. So, we will never go back to this place again, and will advise our friends and family not to go as well. Way too expensive for disgusting food!
A very rude employee – Richard's service, food and drinks were great - but I do have a complaint to make. I live in Houston and my boyfriend lives in San Antonio and works at another establishment on the riverwalk and therefore knows a lot of the other servers that work there. We had dinner and I happened to pay the bill and we went on our way. Later that night he and I were in the lobby of our hotel and Michael Buonamanno, another server that works here came in after work and was mouthing off to my boyfriend that he left a lousy tip and should know better than to leave a tip like that. I was EXTREMELY angry that Mr. Buonamanno would dare have the audacity to come out with some kind of mess like this IN A PUBLIC PLACE. I called his supervisor the next day and expressed my concerns over his rude behavior and was assured that they did not tolerate behavior like this in their employees and that something would be done to resolve the situation. Nearly a week has past and nothing has been done.
Good – The location of the restaurant is great, although... the outside sitting is kind of "in the middle of the way", people passing by can basicly look into your mouth. It is not private at all. Inside space is pretty, clean and pleasant. I liked to sit on the patio. You can see the river and people, and you still have your privacy.
Food was always good, (I never found better catfish in San Antonio).
Service.. well, I experienced very bad waiter there, he was even watched and warned by manager that day, but.. surprisingly, he still works there...
The Republic is long gone, but Tex-Mex reigns supreme. – Long Live Texas
Get ready--this menu is laden with heavy doses of state culinary pride. Sit back, sip a Texas-sized margarita and munch on crispy, but not-too-spicy Mexican Bullets (jalapeno poppers), and you too may find yourself humming "The stars at night ...."
Yee-haw: All This and Value Too
What makes The Republic of Texas a fine place to prop up one's boots is that it doesn't pretend to be anything more than a decent meal served under canopies of Texas flags. You'll find an affordable dinner as well as a mean bowl of tortilla soup served with smatterings of fresh tomato, crispy tortilla chips and melted cheese. Speaking of cheese, the enchiladas rojo are smothered in artery-clogging delight and stuffed with mixin's--a Surgeon General's warning should accompany their menu listing. Stick to the Republic's Tex-Mex and you'll be, as they say down here, happy as a hog in slop.
Feeling ignored – The food was good but thats about it. The waiter forgot about us and i had to on several occasion hunt hin down for refills, bill, or just to order. I would have complained to the manager but i could never find him. I have been to SA several times but I will avoid this place next time i go.
