Overlooking the San Fernando plaza, the cathedral holds services weekly, including a festive mass with music at noon on Sundays. The doors often remain open on weekdays and weekend evenings, allowing passer-bys a peek at the couples who kneel at the altar inside, offering prayers and lighting candles.

History
Revered as the oldest cathedral sanctuary in the United States, the church grounds have seen an abundance of historical happenings in their midst. Alamo freedom-fighter James Bowie married his sweetheart here in 1831, and the disputed remains of those who fought in the same battle are arguably laid to rest within the hallowed halls. The site is ever-impressive and imposing and a testament to the durability of the city.
