Pico De Gallo

Where San Antonio Eats Mexican

  • Live mariachi band
  • Private parties
  • Daily lunch specials

Restaurante Pico de Gallo (formerly known as La Carreta Mexican Steak House) opened in 1979 and is located two blocks west of Mi Tierra. It has developed into a popular spot for the locals and is famous for its Parrilladas (assorted charbroiled meats). Pico de Gallo offers not only excellent food and service, but a cultural ambience that San Antonio is famous for.

The romantic music of Mexico can be found at Pico De Gallo, with one of the finest mariachi groups in all of the Southwest. They are true musicians, famous for their extensive repertoire. This award-winning group can play technically demanding pieces that other groups wouldn't dare try.

Editorial Review for Pico De Gallo – by Retha Oliver

In Short
Downtown San Antonio politicos and legal eagles prefer this bright, festive and highly promoted restaurant, one of the few in central downtown that locals actually frequent. Pico is the place to go for cabrito (roast baby goat), a true Mexican specialty, but you can't find a bad meal here. It's worth the walk from the nearby tourist market El Mercado to avoid the less reliable restaurants housed there. Arrive before the offices break for lunch to save a wait.

Not your most authentic mexican food, but it can pass. If you have out of town guest for business, then take them here. It's in the heart of downtown and has easy access to all the tourist spots of SA. But if you are entertaining family and friends that want really good food this isnt' the spot, plus it's kind of pricey.

Pros: central to all the tourist spots

Cons: not really good food

I will never go back. I had a bad experance there the food was just OK,really nothing special. Music was way out of control they kept playing louder an louder even when ask to go away they did not. Manager could not do any thing about it. Waiters were very good and the Tortillas were very hard .

Pros: good parking

Cons: bad Ambience

The hot-pink facade houses Tex-Mex that can even please the palates of westside natives.  See the full editorial review.
