Editorial Review for Central Market – by Retha Oliver
The Scene
Since opening its doors, Central Market has commanded a loyal following, not just for its groceries, which are of the most varied and gourmet-styled in town, but for its prepared foods and coffee shop.
The Goods
Expect a crowd that includes moms on a grocery run, casual lunchers, students from University of the Incarnate Word next door, and let's-make-a-deal power lunchers sub-dividing the world over a cup of coffee. Cinnamon rolls with currants are baked on the premises and the coffee is good, but the real beauty lies in the staggering assortment of ready-to-eat meals and deli items available just inside the market. Buy a plate to go, or simply take it to any available table, along with your choice of exotic beverages from the nearby cooler. Don't forget to pick up a bouquet of flowers on the way to the check-out line.

Insider Tips
When to GoAfter-work and Saturdays are the worst possible times to visit the store.
Know Before You GoHot or freeze-packaged, these tamales are hefty and good. Four types are offered: beef, beef and pork with ancho chiles, bean and cheese, and chicken with jalapenos and tomatillos.
The ExtrasFood samples in the produce and bakery areas are part of the store's appeal. The selection of samples is best during the day and weekends.

I live in California, but have a child who attends college in Texas. Alex in the gift basket department, is absolutely incredible! I call him, and he assembles the greatest basket to make home seem a little closer to our child, who is stressed from finals or is sick with the flu! Since we are not there, having a little "happy" from home makes her distance from home a little easier. Thank you Alex for putting together a basket that says we care.
Pros: service, good selection

In a City of all one chain of Supermarkets, this is a breath of fresh air (even if it is owned by that one chain). The variety of groceries, alcohal, much much more makes this stand out from all the others. The service is good, and the environment laid back. But the secret here is the Dine-in luncheon area. The prices are a bit on the high side, but you definatly get what you pay for. Whether it be the made to order salads, to the myraid of full fledge dinner options, you can't go wrong. Furthermore, with a wide variety of Wine and Spirits (which must be comsumed elsewhere), this place is well worth the deteor
Pros: Selection, Environment, Knowledgeable Staff
Cons: Higher Prices
