The Scene
You know you've walked into a gem of a local restaurant when the hostess knows the names of half the patrons. Visited by families and decorated in the classic dragons-and-Buddha style of Chinese restaurants, Hsiu Yu is a delightful spot for an above-average dinner. Begin your meal with an egg roll or a bowl of egg drop soup and you'll learn why so many locals keep coming back.
The Food
Leave the gourmet-fusion Chinese cuisine to experimental upscale restaurants; Chef Chung Lien Yu sticks to a traditional Chinese menu. His sesame chicken is lightly fried and laced with the perfect amount of ginger. The number of flavorful vegetarian dishes exceeds the usual. For admirers of sweet-and-sour meats, spicy veggies and cold Tsing Tao beer to wash it down, Hsiu Yu is the place to go for a solid meal.

This is the best Chinese food that I have tasted in San Antonio. Not your ordinary "fast food" chain restaurants like PF Changs. If you like Szechuan style chinese food this is the place to go. Authentic!!

My old favorite chinese restaurant was named Ling's Dragon off of FM78 on the northeast side of town. Unfortunately they closed and I was left without a favorite Chinese restaurant. Until a friend of mine who worked at Ling's recommended this place. It is awesome, my favorite is the spicy shredded chicken. Hsiu Yu has become my favorite Chinese restaurant thanks to the awesome food, great service (they all know me by name) and the great atmosphere. Other good Chinese restaurants are Ding How, Royal Inn, and Peng's Chinatown. Make sure to try one of these four before you go to an overrated place like PF Changs or Formosa Gardens.

The food was fair if you want average Chinese food but its not "cuisine". I'd recommend PF Changs or Taipei if you are looking for great Asian dining.

Attention, Fans of Peking Duck:
Twenty-four hours' notice is required for this extravagant dish, and it's worth the wait. The bird emerges from the kitchen with much pomp and circumstance.
