Avoid Van's. My boss and I were in a hurry so we stopped into Van's We were seated in the back near the kitchen. I noticed that not every odor wafting from the back was a pleasant one. The floor by our table (and not in the traffic area from the kitchen) was kind of sticky and slick at the same time. Our springrolls had some kind of black plastic cap the size of a quarter in them. Normally such an event would bring the manager to apologize, but the server seemed dismissive of it and even neglected to take it off the bill. To top it all off the pho we ordered was terrible. There were hardly any noodles and the broth lacked flavor. There's nothing to love about Van's.
disgusting and overpriced food. My family and I had decided to go out to eat one night at what we had heard was a well recommended restaurant (Van's). Upon arriving, the wait staff looked at us like we walked in ten minutes before closing, even though it was 8 o'clock. We sat ourselves because the server at the door had no idea what to do. As we were looking over the hugely extensive menu, we asked our server for a couple orders of california rolls to get us started. He abruptly interrupted us stating that they were running out of rice and might not have enough for both orders and our meals too. My immediate thought was, 'what kind of oriental restaurant goes out of steamed rice?' so we agreed and continued looking at the menu. I didn't want to order what I had ordered last time (sesame chicken) because the chicken pieces were HUGE and there were no knives on the table so I asked the server if he could recommend something flavorful and not too spicy. He recommended garlic chicken. When I said that I didn't really like garlic, he said we probably came to the wrong place if we were looking for something flavorful. We were incredibly surprised that he would dieter us from the restaurant. So I just ordered the sesame chicken to share with my mom and my dad ordered a plate that he was familiar with by having had it at another restaurant. When we got our california rolls they were dry and practically falling apart. My food was exactly what i expected, giant pieces of dry, over cooked chicken. But my dad's looked absolutely disgusting which was confirmed by his face when he took a bite. We really didn't want to be rude and send it back so we just kept eating in a hurry to get out. Meanwhile, another server was clearing off all the tables around us and spraying windex (which I'm sure landed on our food because i could just taste it in the air). so we paid and left. Don't ever go here.
Not worth the time or money.
I?m new in San Antonio and decided to go to Van?s with my family as our very first dining experience here. As we arrived at the restaurant we found it odd that there was a restaurant literally 5 ft away called Vietnam Restaurant. Anyhow, as we entered into the building we were greeted with a dimly lit dining room and faces of bewilderment from the staff. The decor seemed to just be slapped together and did not have any flow. Everything just came across like it was placed where ever.
Unfortunately, the menu had the same disarray. I suppose if you?re looking for a place that serves random dishes from different Asian cultures than this may be the place for you. Funny enough, having such a huge menu, the Vietnamese selection was limited.
The co-owner noticed that we were Vietnamese, and offered us Vietnamese dishes that were not listed on the menu. Unfortunately, even with the extra effort the food was sub-par at best. She really pushed the oysters. She guaranteed that it was the best item on her menu. Left with disappointment I was notified that they ran out of oysters. I decided to order the ?second best item on the menu? now crab. It wasn?t bad. That?s it.
I can not say Van?s was the worst restaurant I?ve ever been to, but the experience just left me with dissatisfaction and a bad first impression of the city?s restaurants.
Not true vietnamese cuisines. I have eaten plenty of vietnamese food in my lifetime and I have to say Van's is not true to vietnamese cuisine. I ordered several of there noodle soups and the ingredients are wrong. They must put in carrots and celery just as a filler. Who has ever heard of Pho with carrots and celery? They also do not put out the right condiments for the soup. The lunch menu is so so, not much different from the chinese places. The restaurant is dirty and the fish tank is smelly and dirty. I would not come here again especailly there are many other places to try.
Don't drive by!. Frommer's guide recommened Van's, but when I drove by the first time I wanted to keep driving!Our server recommended two very delicious dishes from the encyclopedia of a menu, a chicken and vegetables dish made of crisp, fresh veggies and a light sauce and shrimp tempura. The two negatives were the filthy fishtank and the fact that with hundreds of bottles of wine they still charge $7 for a tiny glass of house wine. The food is delicious, definitely stop by!
Quaint, but it needs help..
The exterior of the building is rundown, but the interior is nicer. The most prominent feature of the interior was the vast wine collection, set off by the large, empty, filthy aquarium with a hamster ball sitting in the bottom.
Our waiter seemed to be marginally familiar of the VAST menu, however, our glasses were routinely empty, and he made more than one mistake with our order.
The menu was large, but not very descriptive. The tempura was excellent, but the soup was inedible. The sushi was good, except for the one piece I had which still had skin on it. The rest of the entrees we sampled were of average quality, but everything was overpriced.
Overall, it was a decent restaurant if you enjoy authentic Asian food, however, neither the food nor the service warrants the asking price. The best thing they have to offer is exceptional coffee.
Suprise. After pulling up in the parking lot for lunch I was very apprehensive about Van's. But after tasting the food, I see why there were so many cars parked outside. They had a great variety of food, and all were done exquisitely. Wine selection was quite shocking and impressive. Service was great as well.
Moved from Austin a few years ago, much to the delight of San Antonians..
Mrs. Van's restaurant has garnered a large local following here, including the Alamo Heights set, office lunchers, students and members of the arts and culture crowd. Children delight at the large fish tank that runs the length of one wall. Adults ogle the other walls, lined with wine bottles--one of many areas in which Van's excels. Van's diners are as varied as its divergent cuisine.
The pan-Asian menu includes Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai food, all reliably good. Sushi is available whenever the sushi chef is in, which is almost always these days. Check out the daily specials, which feature dishes like spicy lobster, Chinese combination plates and occasional oddities--wild boar among the stranger of them. Van's is popular for its noodle dishes and affordable lunches, and the variety makes it easy to please picky eaters.

Best wine in an oriental restaurant!. Van's offers a multitude of choices for an extremely fair price! You can pick from a variety of dishes, including great sushi, and wash it down with just about anything! Yes, they have great wine!
