Best Thai restaurant in town!!!!. In response to the review below: We would like to invite you back to Tong's Thai for another visit. We take all of these reviews seriously and if you had a bad experience we would like the chance to make it right. We want to keep the diversity of our servers and the authenticness of our restaurant. I would like to invite anyone that reads these reviews to come into the restaurant and see why we have been voted best thai restaurant in San Antonio 4 years running. We have a fantastic wine list and sake list to compliment the outstanding food. We also are lower priced than most full service restaurants and our sushi is priced below all of our competitors. Our sushi chefs love the challenge of competing with the larger sushi restaurants around town and they will always impress and find something that you will like. If there is ever anything wrong with your food or service while visiting the restaurant please contact a manager and we will make it right. There are many exciting things going on as we are making our patio environment into a lush garden with a waterfall being added in the coming weeks. Come in and enjoy the best Thai restaurant in town!!!
TONG's THAI IS TERRIBLE!. Tong's Thai was so awful! I walked into the restaurant and I felt like I was in a maze! I couldn't find my way around the restaurant. And the service was awful. The waiter was asian, I couldn't understand her and she couldn't understand me. I asked for a coke and she brought me a beer!? And the food was even worse. I got the sweet and sour chicken. It was deep fried and breaded. The veggies weren't fresh and the fish in my sushi didn't taste fresh at all. And the chicken that only came with like 3 small pieces was 12.96! and then the awful sushi was 13.45! They have crazy prices for such terrible food. And then I used the restroom and couldn't get out. The restroom was so small and was in bad condition. So I thought that it was so terrible. I don't know why so many people like it.
Just not the same anymore. I used to go here a lot when I was a student at Trinity about 8 years ago. The place was more low-key then--a little shabbier and hardly ever packed. The food tasted authentic and at a reasonable price. Now, I feel that Tong's has become commercialized. The menu does not taste the same as it used to, and it's obvious that as they have renovated the menu and physical setting, they have also drastically increased the prices. In addition, I'm not that impressed with the bubble tea. Again, it's way overpriced and not prepared as well as what I've had in Austin or Houston. This is a shame because Tong's is one of the few places that offers this treat in San Antonio.
This Restaurant is a MUST!.
My friend recommended this place when we wanted to grab some lunch from our errand running. I've never really had 'Thai' food before so I was a little sceptical, but I eventually agreed - and I'm so glad I did!!
The ambience is awesome, not too over the top. Bathrooms were clean, dining room isn't cramped full. The service was good, and servers were pleasant.
I went with the Chicken Sa-Tay appetizer with a cup of Egg Drop Soup and my friend went with the Summer Rolls appetizer and a cup of Hot and Sour soup. Both dishes were amazing!!!, and you actually got a decent size (considering they were only the appetizers).
It was a little expensive (our bill was about 20 bucks) and the entrees were even more, so I couldn't go everyday, but I was already telling my friend how perfect this place would be to kick off a great date night,.. since they also have a mod little bar, as well. Happy Hour anyone?
Alright thai. This place is not very authentic. I like the thai house alot better. It seems to commercialized in this place. the decorations and ambiance is great but I prefer better food. Bubble drink was just alright.
Unique Environment, Great Food. You can always count on great service and great food. The soup they serve as an appetizer is sometimes too spicey, but it's free, so I can't complain there. I tried their blueberry Bubbletea and it was delicious. Get a bubbletea to go, it makes a great take home desert to a wonderful meal. The shrimp pad thai along with the dragon sushi is definately a must try for this resturant. I love the atmosphere and the interesting music they play in the back ground. It's a very romantic and unique resturant to take any "I'll try anything once" kind of people.
Good food, not so authentic bubble tea....
This lovely restaruant hides on the not so popular austin highway. The ambience was fun and casual, the taste of food is also very good. No strange strong aroma like some other Thai place.
I drove all the way from 1604 to there just to try their bubble tea. After hearing people rave about it, my friend and i decide to give it a try. Although the food and serivce was good, the bubble tea cearly is not what it should be, my Taiwanese( Taiwan is the origination of bubble/boba/pearl/topioca tea for those of who don't know) friend immediately change her order to regular thai tea, when she saw rows of 'flavor powder', but she dicide to let me try it out for a fiar chance. i ordered the tara root flavor, and was shocked to see they scoop the purple powder from a variety of colorful powder containers on the bar. The bubble was too soft, tara root flavor was filled w/cream powder, i can even taste the undissolved powder cluster in my mouth, yuck! My Taiwanese friend later told me, in Taiwan, no matter what flavor you ask for, they will never come in powder form. All ingredients are fresh chuncks of fruit, or fresh house prepare concentrated, the tea are brewed w/specific temperature and timing, and the soul of bubble tea-bubble must be soft w/chewy center...her home made bubble tea sure meets the standards.
I sure agree because i've also sampled bubble teas from LA, Houston, Dallas, and Austin w/her, and each place do have their signature way of brewing the tea(black or green) base, and different chewyness of bubble.
but besides the bubble tea, this is a good place to dine at when you are tire of those chain store restaurant. we feel like entering utopia when we first enter.
Funky environment, good food. I had a delightful experience at Tong's Thai. The service was excellent, as the waitress explained what bubble tea was, the various flavors, as well as her personal favorite, when asked. We went on a Friday evening and did not have to battle crowds, or even wait! How refreshing! The bubble tea is very filling and good, I had the mango flavor. The food was good and served hot. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!
The Best. Without a doubt the best Thai I have had. The Thai Crepe was delicious as well as the spring rolls to start. Main course dishes all were unique and tasty. Nice priced wine list and service was very good. Don't forget to try the new bubble drinks!
The best Thai in San Antonio. I have tried every Thai restaurant here in San Antonio and have concluded that Tong's Thai is absolutely the best. Top notch food and they will make it to fit your appetite, sweet or hot. The service is great and the atmospher is decent (though I usually get it to go). I highly recommend this restaurant.
