In Short – Employees of nearby businesses flood this popular serve-yourself barbecue place year-round while students show up daily after school. The most popular entrees are pork ribs, brisket and sausage, which include two side orders. Bottles of the establishment's barbecue sauce are placed at each table for patrons. You can even take some home with you for a nominal fee. Freebies include bread and pickles. There's a limited list of domestic beers and wines.
BBQ Station Is Over Rated

From the moment we walked in the smell of BBQ was in the air, and that is not a bad thing. Trying to read the menu at the walk up counter was difficult due to the dim lighting. My wife and I had the combo plates. She had the brisket and sausage. Both those meats were OK. I had the brisket and the pork tenderloin. The loin is suposed to be lean but this loin was dry to the point I had to literally douse it in the BBQ sauce to give it some moistness. The BBQ sauce in a squeeze bottle at our table must have been watererd down because I sure didn't taste any flavor from it. I chose the pinto beans as a side order. We were there around 6:30pm(close is 9pm) and the pinto bean container was almost empty. The beans had that unappealing burnt flavor to them. One spoonfull and I never had anymore. The cole slaw was too rich in some sort or dressing that after a few bites, I stopped eating it. The bread was good but hey, they can't mess that up since it was sliced bread from the store. When we walked into the place we smelled BBQ. After we got home we had the smell of that BBQ in our clothing. If you are visiting Texas and want authentic BBQ, go elsewhere. We personally have agreeed not to go back.

Run Away!

The previous reviews of this place were confusing, lots of pros and lots of cons. We were looking for a nearby alternate 'cue place, and decided to give the Station a try. Outside the place are several planters filled with empty beer bottles and other unsavory trash, still, we went in. Inside smelled appropriately smoky for this type of establishment, and we were greeted warmly by the man behind the counter. All of us decided what we wanted to eat- combo plates with two meats and two sides for under seven dollars, drinks extra (no beer sold here, despite the outside). Free refills on the pinto beans! Which are located in the dining room in a large cauldron with a broken lid and splatters everywhere from who knows when. Now, I know that this place used to be a service station at one time, but the cleanliness of the place makes it feel like its still in the transition phase. The dining area- dirty looking smudges and splatters on all painted surfaces, tables leaning in all different directions from the floor being unlevel. The soda fountain has greasy buildup from years of not being cleaned properly. The motel style ice machine is centrally located in the middle of the dining area for your convenience, complete with rust stains running down the side, and constantly running motor for ambiance. Oh yeah, the food, creamed corn should not be able to be stacked like Legos. The store bought sausage was about half an hour away from being jerky. The brisket was dry, tough, and flavorless; beef ribs - tough and dry. Meat serving size is approximately 3 ounces. It is a New Year, so maybe I got there just before they changed the deep fryer oil for the season, my fries had that unmistakable old oil flavor. My wife liked the sauce, however the big display shelf in the front of the restaurant advertising bottled sauce for three bucks was empty. One nice feature was the choice of white or wheat bread with your meal!

The best BBQ in S.A. is gonna be in the 'burbs (I have yet to try augie's barbed wire). but if you don't wanna make that trek, Barbecue Station if pretty good. Especially the brisket, by which we all know a BBQ joint must be judged. Potato salad was, as mentioned in another post, like mashed potatos. Other sides were OK. The chicken was cooked to perfection! BUT the seasoning was heavy on the salt, which is this places downfall. Based on the brisket alone, we're talking 4 or 5 stars (did i mention this sauce was awesome!?) But everything else was salty! the green beans, the chicken and the ribs...i know its a mixed review, but i would definitely say go give it a try - and get some brisket!
- Pros: Brisket, Service
- Cons: Over-seasoning
