Editorial Review for Taco Cabana – by Courtney Schmoker
The Scene
Most Taco Cabanas have a hot-pink exterior with a festive look that's echoed by a colorful sun-drenched interior and a palm-shaded patio. This flagship location, with its covered, indoor-outdoor dining area, is slightly different, owing to its peculiar origin. Restrooms are around back, and the overall feel is funky. During the wee hours, expect boisterous revelers still giddy from dance and drink.
The Food
Nearly everything is pretty good, but the flour tortillas--hot, homemade and delicious when slathered in butter or dipped in the sauce of the cilantro-heavy "borracho beans"--offer the best tastes by far. The fajita beef is surprisingly tasty, and the guacamole is always fresh, but avoid the bland queso. The best deal--the flameante (rotisserie-grilled) plate--has chicken that's juicy and well-flavored by the lime marinade. Top off any order with jalapenos, onions, fresh cilantro and various salsas at the condiment bar.

These are comments about a famous San Antonio institution I never thought I woulod ever have to write, but they are sadly all to true. The City of San Antonio shut them down for having EXTREME UNCLEAN Kitchen (CitySearch won't permit the real words referring directly to lots of four legged crawlers). This was a rare step they took and most likely this speaks to just how bad the problem was/is. I'm sure they will point the finger at the teenagers they employ at minimum wages and promptly make scapegoats of them. This is a huge problem and speaks directly to the executive management and ownership of what can now only be regarded as a filthy, unfit for human consumption chain. Shame on every corporate manager they have for either allowing it or being so incredably ignorant. I will not eat there again and I highly recommend that you do not either.
Pros: Shut down by the City, right then and there, what else do you want to know?
Cons: Four legged crawlers and their eggs were found all over the food
