Editorial Review for La Fonda on Main – by Alan Carl
The Scene
Open for longer than most locals have been alive, La Fonda on Main Street is an institution. But while the creaky floors and Monte Vista-in-its-prime building certainly feel old, the menu is as fresh and inventive as that of any recent upstart. A boldly spicy salsa and an entire page of margaritas start the evening perfectly.
The Food
Sure, it has the standard enchiladas, but to really get the flavor of La Fonda, you must try its more creative Mexican dishes. The filete norteno, for example, features a smoky tenderloin, crisp papas and a cheese enchilada draped in a spicy salsa roja. Or go for the roasted poblano relleno, a delectable vegetarian dish that comes with a spinach-and-cheese enchilada that's simultaneously rich and tart. After you end your meal with a creamy slice of tres leches, you'll have no doubt that La Fonda will last another 70 years.

Know Before You GoDon't be fooled: The other La Fondas in town are not nearly as good as the one on Main Street.

I've patronized this SA landmark since the 70's. Located in a quaint stucco building in a quiet neighborhood that is easily accessible from downtown area, this restaurant is a favorite for locals and a real treat for tourists. The atmosphere and service recalls that old-time casual dining experience that has virtually disappeared from the restaurant scene now days. The patio area is a ideal spot to enjoy a margarita or a tall glass of sangria. Service is generally very good, but there have been occasions over the years when I felt a little neglected. Food is primarily traditional Tex Mex with a lean toward Southwest cuisine. I'd rate the quality on most dishes I've sampled as middle-of-the-road average in a town that boasts some of the best mexican food in Texas. My wife and grown daughter love this "cute" little place. As former restaurant owner, I have to point out that great food and decent service will sell regardless of the "atmospere", but the over-all experience at La Fonda should place it pretty high on your dining list the next time you're in SA.
Pros: If you have a romantic notion of old SA Mexican dining, it's perfect.
Cons: Average food in a great Mexican food town.

Each year my BFFs come here, drink spectacular margaritas on the patio, order the specials and celebrate our lives and loves in San Antonio. Wouldn't go anywhere else!
Pros: cuisine, not just food
Cons: parking limited due to popularity
