Editorial Review for Taco Taco Cafe – by Jennifer Wehunt
The Scene
Housed innocuously on the corner of Hildebrand and McCullough, this little taco factory cranks out breakfast later than anywhere else and the catch is, it's good. Dripping with groggy students and families, Taco Taco keeps dishing up the papas until 2pm, a virtual anomaly in taco time. But don't wait until the last minute. A line of hungry locals invariably congregates at Taco's west door, hawkishly eyeing tables occupied too long by lingerers mopping up refried beans.
The Food
The chilaquiles are worth the wait: eggs are fluffy, cheese is appropriately orange, peppers carry bite and tortilla strips are crisp. Other breakfast highlights include chorizo con huevos, rich and earthy with cumin, barbacoa and surprisingly tasty coffee. Come prepared with a few phrases en espanol even if you're not a native speaker--the "Mas cafe?" will invariably be delivered in Spanish. Buen provecho.

I have gone to Taco-Taco many many times and enjoyed the experience. A month ago we had bad service and thought it was an anomaly. Last weekend, we retunred and had the following experience: Our waitress did not bring out chips and we had to ask for them. We asked for coffee with cream and she brought us cups filled so high that they spilled on to the saucer. She would not refill our coffee unless we flagged her down. We ordered guacamole to have with chips and waited 10 minutes for a simple scoop. When I ordered my fajita plate, she asked beef or chicken? and I asked for chicken. She wrote beef on the ticket...It helps to repeat the order. When we received our plates, we did not get tortillas. We asked for her to bring corn and she brought them out after the table was finished with their meals. WORST OF ALL: When I complained to the manager at the register, he simply told me he would talk to the waitress and immediately asked for the money. Tells you where the focus was. For food we should all be able to cook at home, at least in central Texas, it goes to show that we like to eat out for the atmosphere and social experience. Once the experience is lost, there is not a strong reason to return to the establishment. I told the manager that when times are good, it is easy not to care, but bad service will ensure that good times will not last. We will never return.
Pros: Good prices - Decent menu
Cons: Poor service staff
