A very bad bar. I have been a regular at Joey's for over ten years. The other day, I asked myself a simple question, "Why?" It is by far the most expensive bar in the area. The narrow set up of the bar is an architectural nightmare. The service is slow, slower than just about any place I can recall. But the worst part about this bar is the staff and their attitudes. At best, they are unpleasant, and most nights they are openly contemptuous. They seem to make it their goal to make the customers feel as unwelcome as possible. A few months back, I had several friends from out of town visiting. I took them to Joey's, and wow, that was a huge mistake! I was so embarrassed. All night, I had to hear my friends tell me how horrible the bar scene in San Antonio is compared to Austin, Alberquerque, and Denver. I tried to explain to them that Joey's was not indicative of our town, but to no avail. This is not a good place.
Whether you're looking to play pool or toss back a few, this friendly neighborhood joint will welcome you with open arms..
The Scene
Part of a small enclave of clubs known as the St. Mary's strip, the bar attracts downtown professionals during happy hour, and students from nearby universities later in the evening. Pool players have seven hourly tables and two coin-operated ones to choose from. A state-of-the-art sound system assures that even people who aren't seated near one of the TVs can hear the game, whether they're playing pool, sitting at the main bar, or lounging on the rooftop deck.
The Draw
With 17 beers on tap, 50 bottled beers, and a full bar, drinkers have an abundance of options. Regulars and longtime employees credit owner Joey Villarreal for the bar's lasting appeal. Under his steady guidance, the downscale watering hole has maintained a loyal following even as several nearby clubs have flamed out. It's a simple but reliable business plan: reasonably priced drinks, better-than-average pub grub, plenty of pool tables, and friendly service.
Not for the hipsters. Great overall bar that is unpretentious. Not a lot of sitting room, however, don't plan on a big group.
Joey's is great.. When no one can agree on what to do or where to go we always end up at Joey's. It's a sure thing - a great place to meet up with some friends and chill. They have a good beer selection and serve food (pizza, sandwiches) as well. Everything I've had there has been great.
