Editorial Review for Pig Stands – by Citysearch Staff
In Short
A San Antonio original, Pig Stand restaurants once served diners in the privacy of their own car, but today it's eat inside. Daily lunch specials include everything from enchiladas to chicken pot pie, usually with a complement of canned veggies. The menu celebrates Texas specialties like chicken-fried steak, chicken-fried chicken and, as the name implies, various versions of pork sandwiches. Classic burgers, greasy french fries and around-the-clock breakfast highlight a menu that never changes.

We moved to the Rio Grande Valley from Ohio a year ago and were visiting San Antonio for Fiesta. We were lucky enough to come in after 10pm. The Food Channel's recommendation isn't enough? Well being the first drive-in, and the last one of this chain (88th anniversary!), this restaurant deserves all the applause it receives! The fried chicken was wonderful, Robert and I agreed. Bruce loved the pancakes, Adolfo the Mexican food. We know, we know that pulled pork sandwiches are the thing to order, but we have had Barbacoa coming out our ears for months. The waitress was laughing and friendly, in spite of some surly customer, and surprisingly the juke box really was a draw. Locals sang along and cheered the selections, even though they hadn't chosen them. It was a fun night. And why not?! It was Fiesta and we were at Pig Stand.
Pros: local feel, awards, not pretentious at all, not a chain, Fried Chicken
Cons: not beautiful, not polished, not designed by a corporation or chain (or are these pros?)

I eat at the PIg Stand on Broadway at least once a week. For a classic diner, this one was built in the sixties, it is as good as any. Great Hamburgers, shakes and sundaes, as well as fried fish and chicken fried steak. My wife loves the Pig Sandwich. I enjoying playing a few old songs on the jukebox while I am waiting for my food to arrive. You can select your favorite tunes right at your booth. The service is pretty good too, unless they get real busy, then it can become a little slow. I am glad this one was saved from the doom the others have succumbed to. They also serve some great plate lunches on weekdays. Everything from chicken and dumplings to enchiladas. If you like diner food, this is the place.
Pros: good food, cool jukebox
Cons: can get busy at times
