Seemingly run-of-the-mill restaurant serves up some of the freshest Chinese food in town..
The Scene
A Chinese restaurant in a strip mall is about as commonplace as a sappy quote in a not-so-fresh fortune cookie. Hidden off Blanco Road inside the Loop, Wang's Garden would appear to fit the mold. But the sleek interior, preferring sharp lines to the usual Asian-themed clutter, reveals Wang's Garden to be a different kind of restaurant. Stylish yet simple, the interior mirrors the food.
The Food
Many inexpensive Chinese restaurants saturate each dish with oil and spice to mask stale ingredients; not so at Wang's. Pure flavor attests to straightforward cooking methods. The General Tso's chicken, a dish notorious for covering up tough meat, is a delectable entree that forgoes the usual heavy spice in favor of a mild serrano flavor that allows the tender chicken taste to press through. Equally appealing, the Mongolian beef is prepared in light oil and, while "hot" according to the menu, is only semi-spicy, with the top-quality beef, along with a hints of onion, providing most of the dish's flavor.
