Goro's Sushi Yum. I usually go to Sushi Zushi and pay outrageous prices and in the end isn't really satisfied. I tried Goro's Sushi this pass week and fell in love with it. The Fish is Fresh and the prices are really reasonable.

I look forward to going back very soon.

Pros:

*Excellent Sushi

*Avariety

*Cheap

*Wonderful staff

Northside spot serves what may be the finest sushi in the city.. The Scene
Devoid of the Asian thrift-store decor that crowds many sushi restaurants, Goro's sticks to simple wood in a romantically lit interior. Patrons can sit at the long sushi bar behind which co-owner Goro performs sushi magic in a blur of bamboo rollers and blades. Among the tables, you'll find families, trendy youngsters and the occasional local celebrity.

The Food
The many sushi varieties served at Goro's all meet the highest standards. In particular, the French roll blends a creamy aioli-like sauce with fresh shrimp and smelt roe to create a can't-stop-eating-it richness. The yellowtail (hamachi) is soft in taste and a good choice for amateurs and connoisseurs alike. Goro and crew also cook up a number of non-sushi items, including various teriyakis, tempuras and a savory tonkatsu--a deep-fried pork cutlet thinly covered in a piquant sauce.

Cheap but not good. I should've known - this place had good ratings and reviews but they're all outdated. Here's a recent one for you. I always go to Sushi Zushi so my boyfriend and I decided to try someplace new. When you walk in, you sit yourself - which I didn't mind. A first glance at the menu may appear impressive because the prices are below average. I had the squid seaweed salad for an appetizer which was very good. After that, I was served miso soup and salad which was unexpected but a delight. However, the soup was very bland. This was the start of the downhill. Our rolls came out along with the nigiri order and hand rolls. The fish is not fresh and there is way too much rice in the rolls which makes you full off of the rice and not the fish. It was nothing what I expected based on the reviews I read. When we were done eating, we waited and waited for our waiter to come by to give us our check (who by the way, never came by to check up on us during our meal). The food made us very sleepy so when we got home, we knocked out and fell asleep. This makes me believe they may put preservatives in their fish! It could have also been the packing of the rice in our rolls. I give it a 2 because if all you care about is the price and not at all about the quality and taste of the fish & food, you should definitely come here.

Helpful waitstaff. Visited Goro's because of all the great reviews. MUST go to happy hour 5-7 pm. Nigiri sushi varies from $1.00-1.50. Only drawback is that there is not as much variety on the sushi rolls as other restaurants and we did not find any handrolls. Whole scallop nigiri is much better than the regular scallop nigiri (tasted a bit like onion paste). Waitstaff was prompt and very helpful especially since this was our first time.

So you want to try some sushi, eh?. I have been going to Goro's for about 2 years now, and I absolutely love it. I was a little squemish at first, but in talking to Goro himself, he made me feel at ease and had some recommendations as to what to try as a first timer. The atmosphere is excellent, the staff is friendly and informative. I highly recommend Goro's for the beginner as well as the professional sushi eater.
