So we decided to try a new place and were sorely disappointed by Dad's. When we arrived we tipped $5 and put in two requests. I never got to sing, the speckled DJ opted instead to take one of the slots himself, took way too long to find songs often playing the wrong version. Where did they find this hack??? If you want great karaoke where you can actually sing because the DJ has integrity, try the 2015 on San Pedro. I know I will be going the extra 3.5 miles to be happy when the night ends.
San Antonio's Karaoke Hot Spot!! – April 2012
I’ve been a karaoke junkie since the summer of 2011. Since then, my addiction has taken me to karaoke hot spots all over California and Texas. The most popular place I’ve been to was The Brass Monkey in Los Angeles, California where all sorts of celebrities have been known to croon over a song or two. That being said, I can confidently say that Dad’s Karaoke Bar in San Antonio, TX is, by far, unsurpassed when it comes to song selection, fair rotation orders, customer service, quality of patronage and location, location, location!
Dad’s Karaoke Bar is a charming, quaint-looking tavern off of Loop 410 and Vance Jackson in Central San Antonio. As you enter, the first thing you notice is the library designed stage area where you can actually pull real books of the shelf. (Apparently, the original owner was a retired lawyer and finally found a place to put all his old law books.) More interestingly, you won’t have much time or desire for literature once the KJ gets the party started. The studious decor gives the place a classy feel and seems to appeal to the same sort of clientele. Rumor has it, that some of our own home-grown celebrities have been known to frequent Dad’s Karaoke.
The very first night I went to Dad’s Sing-A-Long Club, I went alone and walked towards the KJ (Karaoke Jockey) booth to sign up for a song. It was a Saturday and a full house. I was nervous because as I started to listen to the patrons go up and sing, I realized that this is where all the other karaoke “addicts” came as well. I listened to some Whitney Houston, Adele, Journey, Heart, Vanilla Ice, and even some Boy George. Then, it was my turn. I decided to sing Nobody by Sylvia, a pop country song from back in the day. I messed up a little bit, but the crowd still cheered and hollered and made me feel like I was in a Jem and the Holograms episode. That night I met Bill, Chris, David, and Dana. Later, I met CiCi, Chip and the ever rambunctious, yet extremely talented, Sincere. These are just a few of the “regulars” who welcomed me with open arms and have made Dad’s my very own personal Cheers, where everybody knows your name.
I’ve been to every karaoke bar in town. I’ve even had a few mobile KJ favorites. If karaoke, good drinks and friendly conversation is your thing, then Dad’s Karaoke is the place to go.
WOW!!! CLEAN HOUSE...CLEAN UP THE ACT!!! – Okay, so I got home from the let's see how did the Management representatives put it...*#&$&# Grand #&R$E*#&# Opening of the BEST Mother *&#&# Place in Town!!! Damn! under previous management that "OVERZEALOUS" bouncer referred to in a previous review would have bounced someone out for saying one F Bomb.
Seriously, go on and on about how you CLEANED it up. Yep, Marilyn looks nice, so does Elvis...Nice that we can step outside onto the patio. (SUGGESTION---Buy a trough and a lot of ice and put some long necks in it, set it and a cute waitress out on the patio...) Cleaned up the physical part of it. Staff...love how they wave back at you like your buddies when you're trying to indicate with money in hand and gestures of drinking a beer. 30 minutes before the man behind the bar(who i was informed later is one of the partners) charged me for a beer I have been known to drink there when I had asked for a the beer on the special. Because it was busy, I let it go.
I proceeded to locate my friends that said they'd be there. TOO FREAKING LOUD TO Talk to them. ---Heads up, from someone who has been around music talent from Dean Martin to Willie Nelson, Two Tons of Steel to Brad Paisley...LOUD don't make anyone sound better....to make people sound better you get a GREAT sound system and hire people who know how to work it.
I'm not expecting ARISTA RECORDS Studio, but it is Dad's Karaoke, a name associated with quality and class in Karaoke. F bombs? Come on!
Yes it was crowded, but I really don't want to be eating with some broad's fat ass and heels on the table, also i think some TABC agents consider that as bad as an adult laying their head on the table. In fact I know some of those agents tend to drop in for OPENING nights...I tried to bring this to the attention of not just one employee, but to the DJ/Owner?...Tried to get him to go outside and tried to suggest that these young ladies refrain from sitting and dancing on the bar, dancing was quite minimal due to the condition of the young lady. He never acknowledged anything I said, and was speaking loudly about his partners and animals in sexual positions.
I did go in with fond memories of Homer's Dad's...(Bless your dirty minded soul, Homer you showed more class than these folks did tonight) and Vi and Paul and Maria's Dad's( one f-bomb slipped one night and boy did I hear about it) and hoped to add to them. THANKS for nothing new management...Well, not nothing...a new appreciation for past management and the dust bunnies. I sure wish you'd quit riding on the coattails of the name and reputation and present a new name so people don't have such high expectations of you.
Why the delay DJ? – If you and a friend get there early and submit 3 songs each, DO NOT expect the DJ to run your songs back to back. He will play at least 1 radio song (but usually 2 or 3) in between each singer, and before you know it 2 hours has passed, you've sang TWICE and the big crowd rolls in, and it will be midnight before your THIRD song rolls around.
Yes, this has happened TWICE to me!
I am NOT encouraged to keep buying drinks, I just drink veeeeeery slowly and buy another when he finally calls my name again.
I'd spend more on drinks if the KDJ wasn't wasting time.
Still looking for a great place to karaoke and might try the $20/hour outfit on the northeast side.
Excited about New Management and Grand Opening – I have had soooooooo many good times at Dad's and have met some great people there. I do hope that the new management is sucessfull. We have had numerous parties and events there. When I was going as a regular I think I actually went thru 5 or 6 KDJ's...in 4 years!
Your selection of a KDJ is critical to the success of the business. Karaoke singers DO GET Offended if the rotation is not followed. There is no place for favoritism for any reason at a Karaoke business. Naturally, you must work in the folks that show up late....but even that has a protocol of common sense.
MY PET peeves: 1) When I have finished a song, and the KDJ is yacking it up with someone and just leaves me to walk off the stage with no acknowledgement.
2) When I request a SLOW VERSION of a song...I write SLOW VERSION on the slip to make it clear....THE SONG played is the fast one. So, I stand there like an idiot, trying to signal him to stop the song...cause he is ONCE AGAIN, yacking it up with buddies. and then wait till he finds the correct one.
THE KDJs you hire will make or break your club. I sure do hope you have some good ones lined up. We will be there to try it out when you re-open....
even though it is a long drive for us....
I wish you all the best!
Dad's Under New Ownership – UPDATE:
Dad's is now under new ownership!
To those of you who had a previous bad experience, we invite you back to enjoy the new Dad's, and can assure you that you will leave wanting to come back
We will be opening in the beginning to mid November 2011 for an all new Dads. The bar has been updated (CLEANED) and is now nonsmoking. For those who tend to light up...there is a back patio with tables and chairs or just to mingle.
All new bar staff and new KJ will be mixing music. The stage is still there, but in a different location.
AND yes...the books are all VERY real!
I will give an update to the actual date of the grand opening...
Love the music selection BUT...... – We are new to this area and were regulars at our last Karaoke place. This place got the best reviews and has a great song list. BUT we went on a Tuesday and there was some serious favoritism going on with the KJ. We got there around 9pm and stayed till closing. We only got to sing twice and had several people sing two - three times between our two. The Bartenders and waiters (whatever they are called) were the best and the only reason we stayed as long as we did. Oh by the way DADS IS NOW SMOKE FREE!!!!! YAAAAAA!!! :D
Rude patron, bouncer too excited – Visiting my sister and her friend in San Antonio for the weekend, we decided to try out Dad's since both my sister and I like to sing. The waitress was attentive and efficient, we got a killer buzz on and enjoyed the karaoke (didn't have to wait very long to sing). That is the positive.
The thing that ruined it for me is getting taken down to the ground by an overly zealous bouncer because I disagreed with his comments he made to me. Shortly before that a female bar patron came up to me and told me I "had not asked her permission" to take her picture. Evidently, the random shots of people and goings-on of the bar I was snapping really offended her. She told the bouncer about it, the bouncer had words with me about it, I told him that was a ridiculous complaint she made, he threw me down to the ground, yada, yada, yada.
So, people if you like to have a peaceful drinking and karaokeing experience, avoid Dad's at all costs. You might get in a bar fight over some ridiculous B.S. reason.
To the white fat-guy, twenty something bouncer that took me down. I exercised restraint because unlike you I am a mature adult and jail is not an option for an upstanding, civil citizen such as myself. Plus, I was with my friends and didn't want to drag them into any undue drama. So, you're welcome for not kicking your ass.
To the white female who took offense to being randomly in one of my pictures. Get over yourself. It won't steal your soul to be a random subject in a party picture. If you're hiding the fact that you're out at the bar from your husband, AA sponsor, or significant other, you've got bigger problems than me. You are pathetic.
To Dad's owners and management, you will want to closely monitor your bouncing staff. You wouldn't want them to get your club into any legal troubles.
BadExpierence – started out great, til i got my first drink, crown and coke was clear and watered down??melted ice floating??? sent it back , got the same thing back. finally after complaining 3 times, they made it right. how do you mess up crown and coke?? Dj was absolutely rude, like singing kareokee was something u had to kiss ass to do, and let his friends sing back to back songs while everyone waited thier turn! I complained and got cussed out by the DJ. I will never return to that spot, the staff needs to learn to bartend and they need learn better people skills. What a horrible expierence , Im so sorry i invited my friends and family there!! NOt Recommended
Awesome Place – I went here for the first time last week and had a great time. It is small and local but has a great electric feeling about it as soon as you walk in. Drinks are good price and everybody cheers on everybody. They even got me to get up and dance while others were singing but it was just because everyone was so friendly and upbeat. Highly recommended!!!
