General Manager of Gene Brown's Transmission
I have Known Ron (Owner) and used this Gene Brown Location (Grissom Rd) since 1998 when I first got stationed here in San Antonio. I found this shop after having several other mechanics lie to my face and pressure Up-sale me, so it was refreshing to find someone that would be Straight-up with me.
Ron has been nothing but a stand up businessman in our dealing and has always taken the time to explain what was going on with my vehicle. I have recently had Ron work on two of my vehicles that had some complex issues going on, and in both instances they went above and beyond to solve the issue. Not only that, the price that I was charged was more than fair!
I have recommended this shop to several people who were looking for an honest mechanic and all have been more than satisfied. Bottom Line…I highly recommend Gene Brown Transmission (Grissom Rd) for full service auto repair!!!
My vehicle would not start no matter what I tried. called numerous shops to get advise, the only shop that would give me the time of day, because I can get long winded, was Gene Brown transmission. I replaced the fuel pump thinking the vehicle wasn't getting fuel. Chris advised me to check to see if I was getting fire. Called him back to advise him that I was not getting fire. He advised me to have vehicle towed to his shop and the initial diagnostic charge would be waived. The security system was not allowing vehicle to start. Turns out to be that the spare key I had made was not programmed to my Ford Explorer. They charged me a fair price to reprogram my key and also waived the tow fee. The repair was actually done in one afternoon. I would recommend his shop to anybody. .
Had my timing belt done. They were very quick and did an excellent job. They even dropped me off and picked me up from work to make the scheduling easier. I would definitely go again.
GENE BROWN no longer owns these stores.
We went there based on prior reviews, big mistake.
We began our ordeal dealing with the owners son, who was more interested in texting than discussing our transmission.
He test drove the car and the initial estimate to repair the transmission was $1,300.00, which was about $1,000.00 less than we had been quoted from another shop.
Apparently, this is how they pull you in.
Once they had the transmission apart, then the estimate quickly changed to $2,500.00 and we were told that if we did not want to proceed, they could put the transmission back together, but they could not guarantee that it would make it home.
Faced with this, we decided to go ahead with the repairs since it was still in the ballpark that we had been quoted at another place.
The two days to rebuild our transmission quickly became a week. The big problem here was lack of communication.
No one ever bothered to call let us know about the delays. We had to call them just to be told, there were "problems".
Each time they would give us another ready date, my wife would sit around all day waiting and unless she called them, no one would call to let her know that the car would not be ready as promised.
Finally the car was ready and my wife picked it up. At this point, we had now paid $2,500.00.
When my wife picked it up, she was told it had a 12,000mi/12 month warranty.
However, the "rebuilt" transmission had the same problems that it had when we took it in. Apparently the 12/12 warranty did not apply because after another week, we were given the option to have a professionally rebuilt transmission installed at an additional cost ($500.00) or continue to let them work on our transmission at an estimated cost of $800.00+.
Basically, I was told they had no idea what was wrong and they would just start replacing things.
At this point, we were dealing with the owner "Ron". He honestly had no clue what was wrong with the transmission.
We decided to go with the "professionally" rebuilt transmission.
As some other reviews have mentioned, the problems with the "professionally" rebuilt transmission were our fault.
The motor mounts were old and they broke them when they replaced the transmission.
Ron generously offered to replace them for his cost of the parts only. Next, he determined the spark plugs were causing problems with the new transmission, again, offered to replace them and charge us only his cost of parts.
So, we finally picked up the car for an additional $1,100.00.
Turns out he decided to replace an oxygen sensor he felt might be causing problems.
We have now paid $3,600.00 and still have to take the car to another mechanic and pay to have everything Ron did checked out.
We simply do not trust anything they did or charged us for.
I really wonder if they actually replaced the transmission.
The car was originally taken in for service on August 5th, we finally got it back September 3rd.
A last word of caution, if Ron offers to install or replace anything for the cost of parts only, do not believe him.
It's a TRAP!
Amazing fast service. Ron made it very easy for me to get back on the road, his team did an exceptional job on rebuilding my transmission and his rates were far below his competitors. Thank you very much Ron and the guys at gene brown on Grissom road.
I HAD MY TRANNY REBUILT BY THEM AND INSTALLED IT MYSELF. IT DIDNT WORK. I TOOK MY CAR TO THEM SO THEY COULD CHECK IT OUT. WHILE I WAS GONE SOMEONE STABBED A HOLE IN THE TRANSMISSION LINE GOING TO THE RADIATOR AND TOLD ME IT WAS MY FAULT FOR DRIVING IT WITH OUT TRANY FLUID. I TOLD THEM THAT THEY WERE LYING AND CHEATING. I TOLD THEM I PULLED THE CAR OVER THERE ON A DOLLY AND DROVE IT OFF OF THE DOLLY. I ALSO TOLD THEM THAT I PERSONALLY PUT TRANNY FLUID IN IT BEFORE STARTING THE CAR, AND DROVE IT AND FOUND OUT IT WASNT SHIFTING CORRECTLY. OFCOURSE I LOOKED FOR LEAKS BEFORE DRIVING IT . WHEN I LEFT MY CAR WITH THEM THERE WERE NO LEAKS AND THE TRANNY WAS FULL. WHEN I WENT BACK THE NEXT DAY THERE WAS A HOLE AND THE TRANNY WAS EMPTY. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO GENE BROWN. YOU'LL BE SORRY. MECHANICS ARE SHADDY. RON IS A CON MAN
Outstanding Service. I cannot thank Ron and his crew enough for the recent work they did on one of my vehicles. I recently took in an older vehicle (1997 Lumina) to see if it was worth fixing. Ron took the time to thoroughly inspect the vehicle and fix the few things that were not working properly. But what impressed me the most was his willingness to work with me on the cost. Ron's prices are comparable to other great mechanics, but a lot cheaper then taking your vehicle to the dealer. I highly recommend Ron and have complete faith in his honestly. But the most important thing about Ron is that he stands behind his work. Having car problems, please go see Ron.
Truck went in for transmission repair and got it back with a broken heater which was working perfectly fine when it went to the shop. I took it back to them to show them what they did and how they tried to cover it up (see pics). Of course they denied they did it. I guess it was too much to ask for a honest mechanic. I DON'T recommend this place!
As a single female with no idea about cars other than the oil needs to be changed every so many miles, it is hard to not feel like your being takin advantage of when it comes to work on your car. In the past 6 weeks I have been to 2 different auto shops for 2 different situations to the tune of 1300.00. 1 shop didn't tighten the bolts...the other shop messed my hood up so that i couldn't open it.
Both shops said my transmission pan is leaking....was i glad i found a coupon and would spend less than a 100.00...i was good....the other auto shops didn't bother to take the transmission pan off my car and look underneath at the real problem....ron and his employees did....it cost me a little more...quite a bit that i hadn't counted on however...ron worked with me and not many people would. My car is running great, am not really sure what would have happened to my car if the other shops had done the work. I will recommend ron to any and everyone i know and i will bring my car back to his shop....
