Editorial Review for Golden Wok Chinese Restaurant – by Alan Carl
The Scene
Golden Wok's interior is stylishly accented with painted bamboo and calligraphic upholstery and houses spacious booths and tables swathed in a warm light. Dim sum (Cantonese for "a bit of heart") is the reason to visit Golden Wok and while the presentation isn't authentic--typically waitresses roll by with carts of mouthwatering morsels from which patrons choose--the unique tastes are undiminished and hold up well in comparison to the great dim sum offerings available in New York and elsewhere.
The Food
Dim sum choices include a variety of dumplings (fried and steamed), shrimp balls and semi-sweet pastries. Don't leave without trying the greasy, potato-esque taro root cakes and the sesame balls filled with a sharply sweet bean curd. The dough around the bao dishes is a little dry, but overall the various dim sum dishes are fresh and flavorful.

I love dim sum on the weekends, they have a great selection and all of it is very fresh and delicious (from what I was brave enough to try... no chicken feet or tripe for me!) Very busy on Sunday afternoon so get there early or go on Saturday. I have been on the weekdays for lunch and like the lunch specials and have always gotten good and prompt service even when they were very busy I never had to wait too long (10-15 min) for a table. They have a limited selection of dim sum during dinner if you can't make it on the weekend mornings.
Pros: dim sum, good food

There are very few places in San Antonio that serves Dim Sum and Golden Wok is one. I like that the food is serve steaming hot and fresh but it is very westernize. If you go at happy hour the selection is limited, you have to sit at the bar and order drinks. Service even at non-rush hours is very slow. The waitresses seem more interested in filling the sugar containers then taking your order or serving you tea. If you are going to eat here expect it to be a leisurely meal not fast and timely.
Pros: Food served steaming hot.
Cons: Service is slow even at non-rush hour times.
