Editorial Review for Blackbeard's Restaurant – by Maura York
The Scene
With a beach-town locale and a pirate namesake, Blackbeard's upbeat atmosphere and galley-inspired decor come as little surprise. Tourist families, convention groups and even many residents feast on straightforward favorites from land and from sea. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable.
The Food
Like most menus in town, Blackbeard's is large and varied, everything from sandwiches to filet mignon, and plenty of seafood. The burger, one of the heartiest around, is brought to perfection when coupled with the restaurant's legendary fried onion rings. Blackbeard's inexpensive lunch specials are equally notorious, especially the crispy chicken fried steak with rich mashed potatoes and green beans--it's the noontime feature three days a week: Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Standard desserts (chocolate or carrot cake, Key lime pie, cheesecake) adequately satisfy those rare guests who aren't already full.

We have not been back to South Padre since 2002. We then visited Blackbeards and loved it. We were very anxious to go back. We visited Blackbeards on June 25 after a long 8 hour drive around 9:00pm. I was VERY disappointed in the food in every way possible. First of all, our salads were watery. The ranch dressing was either watered down or the salad was soaking in water. We had a mess and a puddle in our salads. It was tasteless and disgusting. Our waiter could barely speak English so we got absolutely no communication or satisfaction. Our food, of which we had grilled shrimp and vegetables tasted old, tough, and everything was cold. The best part was the baked potato and that's not saying much. Even our strawberry daquari tasted watered down. For the $95.00 our meal cost, Blackbeards............you have some definite improvements to make. I will not be returning. Donald Entrop
Pros: only the name
Cons: food is too expensive and very bad

My family has been visiting SPI annually since 1989. We have tried Blackbeards several times over the years and we always leave disappointed. The decor is great and gives you a pirate ship feel, but that's about all we like at Blackbeards. We had such a frustrating experience one year that when we got home I decided to write a letter to the manager/owner informing them of the problems in hopes things would improve. My letter was never responded to. A simple "thank you for taking the time to share your experience" would have been nice....but nothing. The prices are too high for the food and the service is lacking in every area. In 2004 we were seated and waited 15 minutes with no attention given our table, so we walked out. We have not been back since. We've visited so many other restaurants on the island over the years, but this is the one restaurant that we absolutely do NOT recommend. For seafood we can recommend Louie's Backyard and for Americana fare there is a Chili's just over the bridge in Port Isabel.
