Editorial Review for The Standard – by Ginny Chien
The Scene
Andre Balazs, hotelier of Chateau Marmont fame, has turned a former retirement home into the grooviest place to crash on the Strip (Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz are investors). Recognizing that cosmopolitan travelers don't always have wallets to match, Balazs keeps rates surprisingly cheap; rooms start at $99.
The Details
At once retro and cyberspacey, it's as if Carol Brady and Jane Jetson teamed up to design their dream hotel (think cobalt blue AstroTurf and upside-down signage). The reception-area DJ and "conversation pit"--a corner of the lobby that's carpeted from floor to ceiling in white shag and furnished with low-slung sectionals--make for a cool place to loiter. A mural of Joshua Tree National Park surrounds another lounge area. An almost-naked model-turned-performance artist lies in a glass display case behind the front desk, and swinging acrylic bubble chairs hang in the foyer.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoKeep in mind that rooms facing the Sunset Strip tend to get a little noisy on Friday and Saturday nights, thanks to the boulevard's hectic nightlife scene. But then most guests of The Standard are here to party anyway.
The ExtrasNon-hotel guests from all over the city drop in for an affordable cut at Rudy's. It's just like your corner barbershop, if your corner barbershop had customers like Matt Dillon and offered tattoos.
Look GoodOn the weekends, they require a 2-night minimum.

The atmosphere of The Standard is top notch and my favorite part was the incredibly comfortable king bed in the Sunset room. On top of that, I got a deal for $199 at their website.

Went to the Purple Lounge inside The Standard last night and was really impressed. I had never been inside the somewhat hidden club or the hotel until last night. Great drink selections, especially the Junior Mintini. I love drinks like that! The hotel has a great vibe and I will recommend it to my friends from out of town looking for a cool hotel in LA.
Pros: Junior Mintini
Cons: Didn't meet a girl worth buying a room for the night!
