Was the best bar in San Antonio. This bar used to be the most beautiful kept secret in San Antonio. Until the new Austin TX owner that owns the San Jose Hotel ruined it. How dare she!!!!!!! I want to know what in the hell she was thinking! Where did all the old furniture go????? She replaced it with cheap and ugly crap!! Thanks for ruining the best bar in San Antonio. Go back to Austin and keep it weird there and not here!! She also ruined the Havanna Hotel as well.
Homophobic and Rude. This was the first and last time I go to this bar. I found it to be extremely pretentious. The bartender was RUDE and homophobic. She literally refused to serve my friend and I. After letting friends know of my experience, they told me this person had refused to serve them at various visits. Overall, I would not frequent this hole in the ground (literally). There are better, more sophisticated, and welcoming bars in San Antonio.
Disappointed. We had high expectations after reading the other reviews, but the drinks were terrible and the crowd was rude. Too many other good bars around to spend time going to this one.
Great atmosphere. This place is definitely one of San Antonio's best kept secrets. It has a very cool, masculine, retro feel to it (you can just imagine Frank Sinatra puffing on a cigar in the corner), bring a date and she'll certainly be impressed. The bartenders are also sweet and very knowledgable. My only regret is that it closes so early on weeknights.
Siting with Hemmingway. This place screams ambiance!! Great place for "drinks". Would also be a great place for a group to go and drink, talk and believe it or not... actually hear them. Easy feel with a decent humidor selection. I recommend the C.A.O Belicoso cigar and a white Russian! Don't expect to pick someone up(not to say it can't happen), it's a come with kinda place. CLASSY!!!
Classy downtown basement bar where the martinis flow and the parking is free..
The Scene
Enter the quiet lobby of the historic Havana Riverwalk Inn and take the elevator down to the basement. When the doors open, you'll feel like you're walking into someone's living room. Leather couches and chairs dot the small two-room bar. Neatly painted black pipes overhead remind you that you're underground. The exposed-brick walls are decorated with antique mirrors, some with shelves holding tiny antique bottles. The well-heeled crowd is generally in their mid-20s to mid-40s.
The Draw
Most people are attracted by the intimate setting, not to mention that it's one of the few downtown destinations with free on-site parking. The soft piped-in jazz allows conversation at a reasonable decibel level. As for drinks, the bar is known for its chocolate martinis, mojitos and an impressive selection of single-malt scotches. If you're hungry, the kitchen dishes up an array of tasty tapas, including garlic shrimp, beef chimichurri and empanadas.
Great Place. This place is a throwback to the 50's. Located at the basement of the Havana Riverwalk Inn, this bar is outfited with comfortable leather chairs and overstuff couches. The music is loud enough to enjoy, but it does not interfere with any conversations. The bartenders are gracious and friendly. This is a great spot for a drink before going out or as a cap on a great evening. If you get there later than 9:30 expect to stand.
An Historic Jewel. Intimate lounge, with an expansive patio overlooking a quiet section of the often loud river walk. If you want a nice, quiet nightcap, away from mad crowds, this is the place. If you're looking for a see-and-be-seen place, this is not the place. Great end-of-date exclamation.
Classy and Comfortable. Great, just like the hotel. Comfortable, good for groups or just two - friendly staff and good drinks.
San Antonio's best-kept secret. Nice, casual bar....great place to take a date. Cigar smoking allowed.
