Once the center of Spanish colonial life, the mission is still vital today.. Beyond the Alamo
The crown jewel of San Antonio's Mission Trail, San Jose is the best preserved of the five missions that dot the bends of the San Antonio River. On the city's South Side just off Roosevelt Avenue, Mission San Jose provides a fascinating and vivid tour through the Spanish colonial past of South Central Texas.

History Up Close
The mission's grounds are remarkably intact after some 250 years of weathering. Take a stroll through the grounds, and you'll get a glimpse into the lives of the Franciscan monks and native indios who inhabited this once-bustling center of farming, craftsmanship and religion.

Unforgettable
You'll be awed by the church's sculpted facade and remnants of its original exterior paint designs. Take the time to explore the inside of one of the Indian family homes, which consist of two tiny rooms, a rustic fireplace and low ceilings and doorways. Finally, contemplate your peaceful surroundings while standing under the stone arches of the convento or in the adjacent garden.

For those who love to walk. The editors didn't give this place such a rave review without a good reason. And on this one they are on the money. You might as well get your moneys worth, cause this is a part of the National Park System, so we are all paying for it. If you love history, this is the place for you. There is alot to discover if you are willing to take the time to find it. Furthermore, this is an operating parish, so please keep that in mind.

An often over looked feature is the partially completed walking trail that is completed south of the site. A leisure walk or bike down the river makes for an inexpensive and enjoyable weekday.
