Dedicated to the memory of World War I veterans, Municipal Auditorium has held concerts, graduations, conventions and Fiesta coronations since opening in 1926. With 5,000 seats and state-of-the-art theater facilities, the strikingly colored structure is well equipped to handle all kinds of events.

The Spanish Colonial Revival building was designed by several architects, including Atlee B. Ayres, all of whom received the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 1929. On Jan. 6, 1979, a fire destroyed the roof and almost all the interior. A restoration was completed in 1985. An abundance of blue-on-white interior spaces and wood-coffered ceilings give the public areas a Mediterranean ambience. The yellow-tiled Byzantine domes shine like miniature suns, and the white structure as a whole glows brilliantly under the South Texas sun.
