Editorial Review for The Davenport – by Robert Macias
The Scene
"Thom McAn Shoes" is still etched into the stone entryway, but the only shoes you'll find inside are attached to young professionals on the prowl. Big windows allow passers-by to browse the merchandise before entering. A long, curved bar and curvy furniture break up the boxy nature of the space. Colorful paintings of women in sunglasses dot the walls. Downstairs, a DJ spins a dreamy variety of world music.
The Draw
The eight-page drink menu offers the first hint that tippling is serious business here. If the Flirtini originally created for Sarah Jessica Parker doesn't interest you, how about a Green Monkey Butt made with vodka and melon liqueur? Or if you're trying to attract someone who will love you for your money, order a shot of Herradura Select tequila and casually plunk down $60 plus a tip.

Hands down the best bar in San Antonio. A bit smoky at times, but hey it's a REAL bar. Stay away if your looking for some cookie cutter national chain. Here you get great service, the biggest selection I have ever seen, (and I've seen many), and great drinks. Downstairs is open nights from Wednesday through Saturday. Dance down there if that's your gig. Upstairs stays chill. Nothing else in this town is even close.
Pros: Selection - Service - Location - Drinks
Cons: None

Previous reviews rated this a top martini bar, but that is far from it. Sits on a downtown corner, barely the size of an average living room. Upon opening the door we were greeted with the most aweful smoke smell I've ever experienced in a bar or restaurant. It was so strong, it stayed on our clothes despite the brief time that we stood in the doorway. Either their smoke eliminators were broken, or they didn't have any. Smoking doesn't bother me much, but this place did. That being said, the place also looked unkept and dingy, not at all as described in other reviews. We will not return.
