Editorial Review for Ruben's Homemade Tamales – by Courtney Schmoker
The Scene
Driving east on Rigsby Avenue, you may start to feel like you're leaving town and hitting the open road. Before accelerating into the great wide open, hit the brakes when you see green--the pea-green roof of Ruben's. The brick building is covered with cigarette and beer signs and houses a dusty-shelf convenience store. Enter and go no farther than the counter at the right. That's where you get what you came for--pork-only tamales that are hot to the touch even though double-wrapped in aluminum foil and a brown paper bag.
The Goods
Four bucks and some change will buy a dozen--the smallest order is a half-dozen. Call at least a day in advance for large orders, and don't expect a price break--"Our tamales are handmade," said the clerk. Ruben's makes traditional tamales, which means only shredded pork is available. What the store lacks in variety, the hot masa bundles make up for in deliciousness.

Insider Tips
See What's Out ThereMunch on tamales and continue east on Rigsby. Just outside of the city limits, it turns into Hwy 87 and runs right through the tiny community of China Groveżmade famous by a Doobie Brother's song.

Ruben's has not only the best tamales, but the best tacos. I miss living in San Antonio, but when I visit I always go there to buy some tamales and tacos. They have always treated me friendly so I have no problems with their service. I have been to restaurants all over Arizona and California and have not found anything even close to Ruben's food. I have been going there for 30 plus years and I won't stop going unless they decide to retire which I hope isn't for a long time. English is the language in America....people should learn it.
Pros: great food all around
Cons: Need a Ruben's in Arizona

IF YOU ARE EVER IN THE MOOD FOR TAMALES, AND YOU SEE THIS ADD-STEER CLEAR!!!!! WE HAVE HAD THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AT RUBENS. I WILL NEVA EVA GO BACK........SO....TAKE MY WORD AND PUT IT TO GOOD USE, I DONT LIKE RUBEN OR HIS TAMALES@I WOULD RATHER GO BUY HEB TAMALES FOR MY FRIENDS OF THE FRIENDLESS WEEKLY MEETINGS. THE COUNTER HELP NOT ONLY NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO TREAT CUSTOMERS, BUT THEY ALL NEED MAKE-OVERS TOO!!!! THE HIRED HELP LIKES TO CUSS UNDER THEIR BREATH AND BECAUSE I AM WHITE, I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT IS BEING SAID ABOUT ME. I FELT LIKE THE HIRED HELP WAS NOT VERY KIND TO ME. I FEEL SAD AND WILL CONVERSATE ABOUT MY UNFORTUNATE VISIT TO RUBENS TAMALES WITH MY FRIENDS OF THE FRIENDLESS GROUP. THANK YOU FOR READING MY REVIEW.
Pros: MEXICAN FOOD IS GOOD, BUT NOT AT RUBENS
Cons: IF YOU NEED TO BE MADE FUN OF, COME TO RUBENS.
