Editorial Review for 700 Acres – by Kristin McGregor

The Scene
If you're tired of battling the barrage of trail-hogging hikers, runners and slow-moving strollers that accompany most city parks, 700 Acres offers a wheels-only escape. The privately owned tract of land is a home away from home for mountain biking enthusiasts of all abilities, making it a favorite for both the experienced and the novice alike.

The Trails
Initially carved out by motorcyclists, the trails present a varied terrain that ranges from fast single-track trails to twisty technical runs. The north side offers some nice warmup rides along Salado Creek to Pecan Valley Golf Course. The south side is a bit tougher, with lots of cacti and gravel-ridden hill climbs and descents. For the more advanced, the wooded single-track along the creek provides wicked technical descents and a "bowl" section with BMX-style jumps.

Want to Go for a Ride?
The 15 miles of criss-cross trails mean that exploration is a prerequisite to putting together a continuous ride, but if you forget your compass, fellow bikers will point you in the right direction or let you tag along.

Insider Tips

How to Get There

From downtown, take I-37/281 south. Exit at Military Drive and proceed north to Alsbrook Drive, just before the bridge.

Parking

Park at the abandoned convenience store parking lot on Fairlawn off Military Drive.

Hazardous Texas Flora

Watch out for cacti, mesquite trees and low-hanging branches that closely border the trail. Bring your spare tube, a pump and plenty of water.

Trail Etiquette

This is not a public park. The family that owns the land has an unofficial "it's OK" attitude, so be sure to respect their property by not littering.
