Even the bus stop in front of the two long buildings proclaims "artists live here." – Overview
San Antonio's shining example of urban renewal is also the city's single largest gathering of artists in one area. Though current rental rates have priced young artists out of the loft living spaces, the diverse galleries and studios still show work by artists at every level and in every price-range. The 137,000-square-foot former warehouse complex developed in 1986.
What to See
The most well-known spaces are the eponymous Blue Star Art Space and the Joan Grona Gallery. For a walk on the wilder side, look to the UTSA Satellite Space gallery, Jump Start Theater, and Say Si, an art organization for young people. The area is surprisingly quiet most nights but the complex is the thumping heart and soul of First Friday, the monthly art walk.
