The truth about this place – First of all the place is under construction so the parking is limited, you will have to wait until someone leaves to get a parking. If you are a first time customer prepare to read lots of signs all over the place of things you can't do; but how silly is that at the entrance there's not a sign to inform you that you can not seat yourself, so if you seat the waitress will tell you that you have to place your order first so you have to wait in line a few minutes to order and then you will have to wait again to be seat it. They tell you that they only have 2 sizes of for the drinks 20oz (NO Refill) and 32oz(Refill) but you better get the 20oz even tho it doesnt have refill is ok because the waitress doesnt go to your table more than 2 times and you wont be able to get the refills you want; the waitress go one time to serve the sodas and the second time to deliver the pizza. We ordered the 42" pizza and it tasted ok but it is not worth the ridiculous price. The service was horrible and the staff were rude, I guess thats why the charge you for the tip when you place the order because they know that they wont get any tips from the "service" they are giving. We did not finish eating that they were already cleaning the table and giving us pizza boxes for the left-overs, we were truelly surprise that we were treated so bad in a place that seems so friendly and cool when we saw it on TV in the food network chanel. We would never come back to that place ever again! This is the first place in San Antonio, Texas that we experienced the worst staff and waitresses. Im telling you, if you want to spend a great time and a nice eating experience go to any other place San Antonio is full of them and then you wont have to go trough what we went trough. Im giving my review to let people know that what we see on TV is not always going to be like what we saw.
Pizza Overrated – I heard about this place on an episode of Man Vs. Food and from a few co-workers so I gave it a shot and I was thoroughly disappointed. The pizza is very much run of the mill. Plan on having to wait at least 10-15 mins just to order. No special taste, sauce, toppings or anything aside the choice to get their HUGE pizza. I went with 2 other ppl and we all were pretty much let down considering all the hype. If you want much better pizza as for taste, check out Goomba's IMHO.
About these reviews – All the bad reviews are from cranky people who do not normally tip 15-17% so they think gratuity is bad. If you don't like tipping the average, stay home. If you go during lunch rush hours, expect a long wait time. This place is good so they have a very long wait. If you plan on staying at a restaurant for more than 30 minutes after you receive your meal, do not go during rushes. All the bad complaints and experiences will seem to disappear.
good pizza – We went on a Saturday around 11:45am. We were seated right away and pizza was served quickly. The waitress kept checking on us, so we experienced really good service. As we were leaving, the line was out the door. I could see how some people could get frustrated with the long wait, but we really enjoyed it and will go back again.
I did not like this place – We went 2 times and both times this place was packed. They told us we had to wait about 45 minutes to be seated so we left. We finally went on a Monday night and were sitted pretty fast. I went with my husband, three kids who are 9,8, and 3. We bought a one pizza and 4 drinks and the meal came out to 47.00 bucks. I thought that was very pricey so I looked at my receipt and it turned out they charged us gratuity charge. If your party is 5 or over you will be charged a gratuity charge no matter how old your kids are. So I was charged an extra 7 dollars on the meal. Well the pizza wasnt that great. It was greasy. For 47.00 I could have went to peter pipers and enjoyed a better tasting pizza for half the price. I would never go here again. It is too small, theres a long wait time, and the pizza is over rated
Great Place – Staff was friendly, we were seated immediately and the pizza was served quick, hot and tasty. The server kept coming by and asking us if we needed anything and how was everything. I called the manager,(don't know if it was Lou himself) and told him how everything was and he said how he appreciated our business. We will be going back.....
Oh and I wanted to add, We had a 20" pizza, with a couple of sodas and with the gratuity it only came out to about $6.00 each, Now if you think that's too much, then go and try and find some other place cheaper. Like I said, I will be taking my family to Big Lou's. Good Pizza.
UPDATE: OK, went back this time in the evening, on a Wednedsay, Parking lot was full but went in anyway. Again we stood in line maybe 2-3 minutes, placed our order the got seated in less than 3 minutes. We got our pizza about 10 minutes later and again the pizza was great, Got the supreme, plenty of sauce, veggies, meats. Everyone was friendly, the waitress came by several times to check on us. So now I have gone at lunch time, and in the evening time, both times everything, everyone was great. So I dont know about the people that complain. Just go there, eat a great pizza and have fun...
Good pizza? Yes - Worth it? Absolutely not! – The pizza, while good, isn't worth putting up with the rude staff and owner.
You have to place your order before they will put you on the list for a table, but don’t expect your drinks until you get to the table. If you want a drink, go to the bar, but I warn you, it isn’t service with a smile. We go to the bar and the bartender immediately tells us we can't have a 14 and 7 year old in the bar area while we ordered our drinks - we had to send them to the other room. The whole while, he allows a boy of maybe 11 to stand there for more than an hour. After about 45 minutes we get a table and soon after, the pizza arrives at our table. The pizza was good but they were skimpy on the mushrooms. There is no wait staff to speak of in that there are no waiters. Everything is ordered and paid for ahead of time. They have runners who bring the pizza to the table and show up twice - the first time to ask if you need a refill on your drink and the second to ask if you have any problems. Yes - not – “Is there anything else you need? “ But, "Do you have any problems?" Our answer was no, everything was fine. During this exchange, we notice that the owner was blatantly standing behind the girl with two people waiting to clear our table. We were there to celebrate a birthday and were in the middle of opening cards and sharing conversation, while the birthday boy continued to eat. Well I guess they didn't like our answer because "Lou" then positioned himself in the other room and essentially stared us down for the next 10 to 15 minutes until we finally left. As we left, my husband took Lou’s hand and said we won't be back.
If you are in for a novelty experience - go to Big Lou's - if you want a good family experience and good pizza - go to your nearest Double Dave's and order the thin crust where the staff is always nice and you have some games to entertain the kids to boot.
Great Experience! – We had a great experience at Big Lou's. We went on a Wed night and ordered the 42" with everything on it. I thought it was fine to order first, then get seated. The wait was not that long and they warn you first that the giant pizza's (37-42") can take up to 1-2 hrs. We knew this going in, and were pleasantly suprised at how fast it actually came out (less than an hr.) Our waitress was very nice and very attentive. Big Lou came over and talked to us awhile and even took some photos with us. The crust was so thin and delicious. The toppings were smothered under the cheese. I would definately eat here again.
Better have about 3 hours for lunch – I went there this Sunday at 1pm and first you walk in and stand in line to place your order, then you have to wait again to be seated by the "hostess" which will not take your name down until you order your food. You have to wait to get your table before you get your drinks and then be prepared to talk to some friends, do your taxes, and read a book because you are going to be waiting. And conserve your drink because after your "waiter" seats you, you are not going to see them again until your food is ready which will be a while. We waited in line for 20 minutes to get to the front of the line and then the girl behind the register stood there listening to the other register talk to the cook for no reason before she took our order. We then sat around for 30 minutes before getting a table. Drinks finally brought out, but the cup was too big for my 5 year old niece so we asked for a small lidded cup like we got for the babies water. Waitress said she would be right back, but did not come back until 45 minutes later when the pizza (2 - 16 inch pepperoni pizzas) was brought out. At which time I again asked for the smaller cup and a refill of my Dr.Pepper, again waitress gone for 20 minutes by which time we had walked up to the register to get a to-go box since waitress no where in sight before waitress returned and brought my refill of Dr.Pepper and joked "sorry almost forgot about that." We had already packed and were getting up to leave when she came back. The worst dinning experience I have ever had and I have been in foreign countries many times. Do not go to this place until they fire every last one of the wait and register staff and get a better plan on how to run a restraunt. And by the way, they had the gaul to include a mandatory tip at the begining when we placed our order and paid becuase we had 4 adults, a 5 year old and a baby for a waitress that gave us 1 round of drinks, brought out 2 pizzas, and handed me a large glass cup as we were leaving that I had to drink down quickly before we left. This place is terrible,
Rudest place in San Antonio – Ordered a pizza to pick up on my way home for work, when I arrived 30 minutes later they said they had no order. When I tried to complain I was told to leave. They have a good business but if they keep treating people like they do it may not last.
