Allergy shots may be needed to control symptoms in some who suffer from environmental allergies. They are often recommended for those who's
respiratory symptoms persist while on anti-histamines and nasal steriods. Skin testing is usually performed to detect allergy sensitivities, but blood testing (RAST) is an alternative.
We offer evaluation and treatment for the following adult and pediatric medical problems: asthma and related lung disorders, hay fever/nasal allergy, childhood eczema or dermatititi, drug allergy, food allergy, insect sting allergy, latex sensitivity, recurrent sinusitis or ear infections(immunity problems), recurrent skin infections (immunity problems), hives and angioedema (tissue swelling) or anaphylaxis.

Made a difference!. I am very happy with Alamo Asthma and Allergy. The office staff is very courteous, professional, and always greets me with a smile. Dr. Vaughn is friendly and thorough. At the end of the day, all this is nice but what makes a difference is if I feel better. I do. I have been a patient for the past 1-1/2 years. During this time my allergy symptoms have subsided substantially. I strongly recommed Alamo Asthma and Allergy.
Improved my quality of life in SA, TX. I moved to San Antonio TX from the Midwest and became very ill. After my 3rd round of anitbotics my primary suggested I may want to be allergy tested. He referred me to Dr Vaughn. I had 25 things in SA that I was allergic to and needed shots. Dr Adrian Vaughn has turned my life around. Now after 3 years of me taking shots religiously, I tested negative to all but a few things and they were greatly reduced. Since starting shots I have not had sinus infections or bronchitis, even though my immune system is low. I am so glad to have found Dr Vaughn and really enjoy my visits to her. She is very engaging , funny, freindly, yet professional and knowlegable. I just love her. Maggie, the one that gives the shots, has become a friend of mine as I see her two times a week, every week. I am now going to be reducing my visits and injections and see how I do, but I am feeling a bit of a sense of loss and withdrawl as I will miss seeing everyone. I know they really helped me to survive here in TX . I highly recommend this group if you are in need of an Allergist. They are supreme! Just can not say enough great things about them. Word of advise, follow their treatment plan and be religious for the best results. It will pay off big time! They know what they are doing for the best results.
Thank you for spreading the word that for persons with severe allergy, who cannot be managed effectively with traditional medical therapy, that there is still hope. Unfortunately, there has been a proliferation of non-Allergist Physicians who are using "home" allergy shots for their patients. These shots have been "watered down" and are claimed to be "safe enough for home use" however; this has never been shown in any reliable clinical study to produce clinical benefits equivalent to shots formulated by Board Certified Allergists. If you are offered "allergy shots " by anyone who is not a trained Allergist, make sure that they will be providing you with 5-20 micrograms of each major allergen *as per the recommendations of the Joint Task Force (www.JCAAI.org) "Practice Parameters for Immunotherapy".. The only allergy shot that is truely "safe enough for home use" is one that has no allergen in it; for this reason, Allergists do not advocate "home" allergy shots.
very helpful and kind. Our family has been going to the Vaughns for allergy treatment for several years now. It has made cedar season tolerable for the first time for those of us allergic. I had tried allergy shots as a child and therefore was skeptical that they would make much of a difference in my asthma symptoms. But I would say these are not your fathers allergy shots. They seem to be both more careful in terms of safety with precautionary medications and quite aggressive in getting the response needed to alleviate allergic response. My asthma symptoms are dramatically reduced from following their advice on the shots and on home allergen prevention. You do have to show up for the shots, but it is worth the effort to avoid misery. I strongly advise people who are miserable to seek out their advice. They are both wonderful. They will spend time with you and go over your specific needs. Every person who works there is friendly and kind every time we visit.
Allergy shots are not for everyone. About 1 in 5 persons seen in our office for nasal allergies or asthma is placed on allergy shots. They are very effective medications if given in high enough doses however; they can also cause serious allergic reactions. The JCAAI (www.JCAAI.org) recommends that allergy shots only be administered by a physician who has been trained to carefully weigh the risks vs. benefits for each individual.
Allergy Shots can be Miraculous. I brought my son Eli to see Dr. Mike 3 years ago. He is 8 now and has had asthma since age 2. He used to take multiple medications and used a nebulizer for his asthma controller medication (pulmicort) twice per day. When he was in kindergarten, his asthma prevented him from being outside during the spring. Every March his eyes would swell closed and his asthma would worsen. Dr. Mike found that his skin testing was severely positive to live Oak pollen and there were several Oak trees on Eli's school playground. Eli also had sensitivity to dog and dustmites. We had never observed any problems around our indoor dog burt after Dr. Vaughn suggested we keep the dog out of Eli's bedroom, his night-time asthma got much better. We also used dust mite covers for the pillows and mattress. Because Eli would be exposed to dog allergens when he was at his grandmother's home we requested allergy shots for Eli. After 3 years on allergy shots (given twice per month at Dr. mike's office) Eli's asthma is gone and he is off all of his medications. Dr. Mike and Dr. Adrianne are both great with kids.
Many parents express frustration with the number of medications their children must take to control their allergy or Asthma symptoms. If the primary trigger for the asthma is allergy, then allergy shots typically result in the reduction of medications needed. The treating physician should be aggressive in seaching out the cause of the illness rather than simply treating the illness symptoms. Every child (or adult) with asthma should have an evaluation for possible allergic triggers by their primary care physician or an Allergist. This can be done by blood work called a RAST test or if the physician is trained, by skin testing. Scratch or prick Skin testing is quick, nearly painless; skin testing should be done without needles. If avoidable allergen triggers are identified, such as dust mites or pet dander, interventions in the home to reduce exposure may result in symptom improvement.
Excellent!!. Very caring and knowledgeable. They'll make sure you get the care & also medications that you need even if you don't have insurance or your insurance does not cover certain things. The staff is also very friendly and helpful. Very satisfied with this office. Thank you.
Thank you for letting people know that many doctors will work with their patients to make sure that the medical services they need are avalable to them for reasonable fees. A good example is the out of pocket cost for allergy testing (for those without insurance is about $50.00). This 10 minute skin test can evaluate 14 common allergens including: Mountain Cedar, spring trees (oak/ pecan) summer grasses and fall weed pollens (ragweed/ / pigweed). This testing also includes dust mites and pet dander (cat / dog) that are potentially avoidable allergic triggers. Knowing what a person is allergic to is extremely important in the medical management of nasal allergies and asthma. Many persons who believe they have nasal allergies actually do not have allergies but actually suffer from chronic persistent sinus infections or irritant sensitivity called "non-allergic rhinitis". These two problems cannot be treated effectively with over-the-counter medications.
Allergy shots saved my relationship. I am an ER doctor in SATX. I first met Dr. Mike as a coworker in 1995. He is the only doctor I know of that is Board Certified to practice Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Allergy & Immunology. In addition, he has a PhD. in Immunology. I first sought his care for my Asthma and Allergy issues several years after he transitioned from ER medicine to full -time Allergy. My spouse has a cat she thinks is our second child (we have only one human child). The cat has the full run of the house and over the years, my allergic sensitivity had grown to the point that I was becoming miserable in my own home; with nasal congestion and wheezing after being in the home for as little as 30 minutes. When I gave my wife the ultimatum "either the cat goes or I do" she simply replied "don't more too far away, long distance relationships don't seem to last." It was then I realized I had to deal with the fact that I had to get allergy shots. Even though I am a physician, I feared the needle. Dr. Mike convinced me that poisoning the cat could get me into real trouble and that I had no other options. I began shots in 2007 and within 1 year of getting shots once every 2 weeks, I could live in my home without daily allegy and asthma medication use. I also noticed that my exercise induced asthma resolved as well. Prior to beginning allergy shots, I had 5-6 sinus infections per year. Dr.Mike checked my immune system to see if I was making antibodies to Strep. pneumonia, a bacteria responsible for about 1/2 of all sinus infections. He discovered that I was not well protected against this organism and administered a "pneumonia shot" that corrected this problem. Since that time, I have not had a single sinus infection. My daughter has also had recurrent sinus infections (and had tons of ear infections as a young child), Dr.Mike suggested the same immune evaluation for her and found that she had not made protective antibodies to the 4 Strep. pnuemonia vaccines (PCV-7) she was given before age 2. She was given the pneumovax shot (PCV-23) as well and has had a dramatically reduced frequency of infections. My whole family loves their office and staff. I could not more wholeheartedly recommend an allergist to those with similar medical or cat problems). We especially love Maggie the shot nurse, sometimes I can't even feel the shot when it is given to me and the clinic shot hours are great. I don't know any other office that is open at 0730 in the am.
Thank you for your review. Streptococcus pneumonia causes about 1/2 of all sinus infections and ear infections. Most children receive 4 pneumococcal vaccinations (PCV-7) before 15 months of age. Unfortunately, these shots do not always stimulate the production of protective antibodies in every child. We feel that it is important to check for these antibodies in anyone who has more that 3 sinus infections or ear infections per year. If antibodies are absent or low, vaccination with pneumovax (PCV-23), containing 23 different varieties of pneumococcus, often sucessfully generates protective antibodies. It has been our experience that if this problem is identified and corrected by vaccination, that many patients feel that their frequency off developing sinus infections or ear infections significantly improves.
Alama Asthma and Allergy. Dr. Vaughn appears to be a nice guy.
fixed my recurrent sinus infections.
As a lifelong sufferer of skin allergies and more recently, environmental allergies, I have found success with the treatment advice of Dr. Adrianne Vaughn. My symptoms have been under control for many years due to Dr. Vaughn's intervention.
My quality of life has been greatly improved with my allergies and exercise-induced asthma in check. I enjoy regular outdoor activities regardless of the season thanks to Dr. Vaughn.
I urge allergy sufferers to take the first, most important step and call the Alamo Asthma & Allergy clinic.
The Best Allergists In SAN ANTONIO. I would first like to say that I would not be alive today if it were not for the care of Drs.Michael and Adrianne Vaughn. Both Drs. together saved my life. I have severe allergies and severe asthma, when I moved to South Texas 9 years ago I did not realize that my allergies were that bad. I was recommended to Alamo Asthma & Allergy by a friend. The Drs. first tested me and began treating me for my asthma. I went from having an Asthma attack every other day to once a month. I now get a Xolair shot for my asthma (its like magic). I also get allergy shots. The Drs. Are blessed to have a wonderful careing staff thats been with them for a long time. That tells you something about his practice. I recommend the Drs. to all my friends and family and coworkers. I honestly can not speak highly enough of these Drs & staff. If you or your friends suffer from allergies or asthma don't wait ,call and make an appointment today.
