Wow - Treated like Royalty! – Okay, so my husband and I had made reservations at The Lodge, another romantic place we had been a couple of years before and we were running late, so we weren't able to make them, so we had to find something fast to celebrate our anniversary. I googled restaurants on my cell phone and called out to my husband the names and Bohanan's was the first name to pop up on restaurants, and he said, "I've heard of that place and it's supposed to be one of the best steakhouses in San Antonio", so I said, sure so we called (of course this was on a Tuesday evening) but we were able to get a reservation 30 minutes in advance (enough time for us to drive there) and we were treated as though we were regulars and had made reservations weeks before. With just a little bit of inquiry they gathered that we were celebrating our anniversary and the maitre'd after putting rose petals on our table, handed my husband a rose to hand to me - what a nice gesture. Mind you, I know my husband had nothing to do with it, since we had just made the reservation minutes before. Further, the wine was excellent and the steaks were outstanding (we have eaten at most of the nicer steakhouses in San Antonio, and this by far was the best). To top it all off, on our dessert plate, the chef personally wrote "happy anniversary" on it - I have never been treated like that before, very unexpected for an unplanned evening. Service was excellent - not too long, not too short and the ambience was definitely what we needed to celebrate our special day. And the best part was that we didn't even ask for special service on our day, it was I guess just part of their service - definitely a plus!!
Too much soy sauce – With reservations, once we were seated it took 45 minutes to get salad. The steaks were prime and very tender however the steaks had way too much soy sauce, it ruined the natural flavor of the steaks. It should be noted that Mark only needs to use some sea salt, pepper and olive oil.
Nothing special. – Typical steak house fare and they are not making a special effort for the prices they get. If you want to charge upper stratosphere prices then you should at least make an effort at being unique and top notch. You can't simply do what all the other steak houses do. Who needs another Mortons or Ruth's Chris?
Better than Ruth Chris – This downtown San Antonio Steak House is easily one of the best steak houses I have been to.
The steaks are thick cut prime beef where the taste of the beef comes through. They don't dress it up all cajun flavor or mexican spice junk like Chili's or Applebee's. The french grilled oysters they call a house specialty are as good as advertised. I sincerely recommend that you order these oysters as an appetizer because I promise you won't be dissapointed.
The service is almost unnecessarily good. Every waiter and waitress are as polite and knowledgable as can be and cater to every want. The wine steward will recommend great wines without making you spend hundreds of dollars on something you don't need or have never heard of.
The prices are a little pricey but you get what you pay for. I think our meals are usually about $40 a plate with drinks but $40 is well worth it.
If you are an out of towner or simply someone looking for a nice taste of San Antonio this is the place to be. The owner is the chef not some corporation in Los Angeles. So you know you'll get the best. This is better than Ruth Chris.
Don't Waste Your Money – Ok, the wife and I we went to Bohanan's in San Antonio on our anniversary. The place is definitely overrated!!! The service was pretentious and I had to wait over 30 minutes with a reservation before we were seated. The food was not what I would be expecting from such a place. The appetizer (Coconut Fried Shrimp) was mediocre. The main dish (Veal Tenderloin) was NOT good at all. It came out cold. In addition, the Baked Squash and rice were heavily OVERSALTED. It was NOT an enjoyable experience. As a place to have an EXPENSIVE business dinner it's Ok, but as a Gourmet place, it was a disaster. Total damage (including tip and drinks) for two of us was $140.00. For that price, I expect better. A lot better. I won't be dining at this establishment again.
Bohanan's Chef / Owner Mark Bohanan Rocks! – This is in response to the posting in August concering PR Chef /Owner. I am sorry that you found it offensive that a chef / owner takes the time to go out into HIS restaurant to talk to his customers and make them feel welcomed, which is something you would never find in a chain. I have been to Bohanan's several times since he opened in 2002 and I have requested that he come out and talk to my husband and myself and throughly enjoy talking to him and never pervcieved the converstation as a PR plug. I really don't think that he has to convince folks that he is "good" when his reputation speaks for itself with getting the 4 diamond award every year since he has been opened and the Wine Spectator Award. Most folks consider it a compliment of someone of his position to speak to them warmly. Perhaps you were a little jealous and it seems pretty petty to let his conversation ruin such an important occasion as yours with your wife.
PR at its worst by owner/chef! – After Bohanans was recommended by a colleague, I gave it a try as I took my wife for our anniversary dinner this past weekend. We had a reservation and to my surprise from being on time, we were asked to have a seat. There were no persons waiting and the restaurant seemed to be less than a quarter full. We sat down on a couch only to speak a few words before we were seated. It was a very nice, romantic setting. The second half of our visit was literally ruined by the owner/chef standing besides and speaking to a local tv anchor woman (name I will not reveal)and her date for the last 20 minutes of our stay while they sat at a tabled besides ours. He was less than 6 feet away from my wife and was definitely giving a PR pitch as we could hear the conversation. Thanks for the bad ending to what would have been a superb visit!
Wow....what a great place! – We came here not knowing what to expect and came away so pleased. The staff were great and helped us make decisions. It was unhurried and very great service. The food was terrific. We had a Choice of bottled water or tap. The drinks were good at a good price. It was a very nice evening and most people looked like they enjoyed it too.
From Bad to Worse – Made a reservation for a special table at 5:30PM. We arrived on time and greeted with "do you have a reservation". The hostess took us directly a table not per our reservation request. Our waitress finally checked and found our table was prepared. So after standing around in an empty restrurant we were taken to our corner table by the windows. Perfect! The worst is yet to come. The main course was very disappointing being served cold and way below par for this supposed level of restaurant. The deserts were Worst! Then upon leaving we fumbled around looking for the exit while 5-6 on-looking staff and management whom were by the exit and did not assist nor speak a courteous enticement to return. As another reviewer wrote, "second class citizens"; we get better treatment at Wal-Mart. It's really too bad!
reign – After reading the almost "personal" slam by Allyn I felt the need to set the record straight. I have held Banquents at Bohanan's and have personally dined over "twelve" times since they opened. On "NO" occasion have my guests or I dealt with anything but perfection, or at least as close to itas possible. Sophisticated, elegant, beautiful..YES, snooty...NOT!!! P.S. at least Allyn liked the food.
