Horrible experience. Ms Gee works in the office and became rude and unprofessional when confronted with any issues. The sensei's were nice but they can't manage all those kids. Some of those kids were bullies. They bullied my kid and others and staff down played any complaints. I didn't want to quit, I wanted it resolved. The last straw was after they stole my son's clothes out of his backpack and cut it with scissors. They told me it was my son who did that not others. So who was watching them when they did this? Some supervision. After school care was not so caring after all. I agree with the POP complaint. I witnessed the same problems.
The Best School I have seen in the City !!! My 2 kids participated in a local program 'Hill Country Karate' for two years, along with several other trial from other schools. This was a complete waist of time and money. After viewing, trying and signing up at The Karate Dojo, we realized that we were paying for substandard Karate instruction.
The instructors are extremely polite, respectful, and knowledgeable. My wife and I appreciate The Dojo dedication to excellence. They encourage the students to learn and become proficient in the art, school, and life.
The classes are well organized. If you are interested in learning the art and participating in a program with folks that CARES about the student over MONEY, you must check out The Karate Dojo for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
Best Karate School and after school program in universal city as well as San Antonio, Texas. Beautiful karate class facility and the Instructors are very knowledgeable. Master Wright is so well recognized and truly a pleasure to work with.
A great family environment! Both my kids and my husband have enrolled. They have taught my kids discipline and we have made some new friends. Coming to this martial arts school will teach you much needed self-defense and keep your children off the streets.
I enrolled my kids into this Karate Dojo (11503 E Loop 1604 N Ste 107, Universal City, TX 78148 ) an after school program, it seems that every week was another hidden fee that was unexpected.
You have to pay for their clothing, gear, have the uniform altered (out of your pocket), patches and then there paying for testing per stripe. I can understand paying for a new belt, but for a piece of electric tape on their belt, really. Every time I would picked my children they told me they had been bullied, and they never wanted to return to the dojo.
My kids didnâ??t like this dojo at all. My kids learned more about video games then karate and they were never excited to be there, like they were for Taekwondo. To which my children enjoyed very much and excelled very well. When I would speak to the staff, they like to make it seem like it was your fault.
Their customer service skills are lacking and they do not empathize at all with children with special needs. (Again blaming the parent for poor parenting or letting you child run away from their problems) Also the adults are never in the same room as your kids are and it was pretty clear to me that he wasn t being watched. When the adult get frustrated with the kids they tell them to â??SHUT UPâ?? is very disrespectful and I myself donâ??t even tell my children this.
My kidâ??s clothes would come up missing and other items as well. I wanted to remove my children from their program and I was told I signed a year contract. I told them my kids donâ??t feel safe in their facilities and that they always felt bullied. They couldn t keep up with what I owed and always had problem with their billing department. They also charge you for two weeks while they are closed during the Christmas Holiday.
That seems unfair to me because the kids are off during that time and parent still have to work. They must be making some profit during that time since none of the kids are there for two weeks and they are still taking everyone payment. However, on post the youth center doesn t not make you sign a year contract nor do they close for 2 weeks and charge you. I know now, to ask for more information such as
How much is the total cost to join this program? Is there a contract? If there a trail period in case my child doesnâ??t like it?
Can I cancel anytime?
What are you rates for testing for a new belt?
How many kids are there in a class?
If I paid for a uniform to fit, why did I receive a bigger one that I had no choice to pay for alteration?
When the kids are out of school why charge additional to have them at the Dojo, when they bring their own food, snacks and drink?
How are they able to stay in business after ripping so many military family members off?
I advice to do your research and stay away from this Dojo as an afterschool program, because you better off to keep the kids at the Y or Youth Center on post.
Owner Response To "Pissed Off Parent" comment on 9/5/2011 – I am disappointed but not surprised at the comments made by `Pissed Off Parent? (POP). POP stated that we did a lousy job baby-sitting and did not teach Karate.
The Karate Dojo is not a childcare facility and we do not teach school curriculum. It is obvious that POP is misguided.
I think the comments made by Don9317 really sum up the entire situation. We regret that another child smacked her child on the arm after she barged in on her while she was changing. However, this situation with her problematic child failing to follow the rules was an ongoing problem. This was the true reason she brought her child to the Dojo; not for babysitting or academic tutoring.
Where were the adults? Definitely not in the changing room while young GIRLS are changing! POP maintained that she was unhappy, but continued to bring her child for the entire summer. This parent was simply tied of us insisting that her child was problematic and that she needed to take the leadership role of PARENT.
POP is correct; she would be better off at the YMCA. FYI: The YMCA is not a babysitting/ Child Care Center as well.
Great Place to Reform a Child – The Dojo is a wonderful place to take your child. The staff is extremely caring and honest. Unlike other schools who just teach your child and send them on their way, the Karate Dojo takes child development to a new level. "They get results, that parents are not able to."
The Family that Trains Together, Stays Together – After taking 20 yrs off from karate, I was looking for a place for my family to train together ... The Karate Dojo is the place.
To address "pissed off parent," I can't disagree more. The Karate Dojo is unparalleled. Last year, 3 national champions were from this dojo. The Headmaster, Hanshi Wright, is a 9th degree black belt; the opportunity to learn for him is exceptional. The sensei's are patient and kind, yet firm. The Karate Dojo may not be the cheapest dojo in town, but you get what you pay for, i.e., quality. It is family friendly and character focused.
Starting over in karate as an adult can be humbling, but I have never felt judged, "less than," or treated like a child. The sensei's are young (the main instructors are all older than 18, some assistant instructors are under 18) but youth is not a problem, it is an asset. They are motivated, well trained and well suited to teach my family. We have been training here for 2 yrs now, and could not be more pleased. Although traditional, the training is relevant to self defense, fitness, and personal development.
If you want a place for you or your children to learn true karate, this is the place!!!
1. We will train our heart and body for a firm and unshaken spirit.
2. We will pursue the true meaning of the martial way so that our senses may be alert.
3. With true vigor we will seek to cultivate a spirit of self denial.
4. We will observe the rules of courtesy, respect our superiors, and refrain from violence.
5. We will follow our God and never forget the true virtue of humility.
6. We will look forward to wisdom and strength, not seeking other's desires.
7. In all our lives through the discipline of Karate, we will seek to fulfill the true meaning of the Way.
8. We shall always practice patience.
9.We shall always keep the fighting spirit of GoJu.
10. We shall be quick to seize opportunities.
Pissed off Parent!!! – My daughter went to Karate Dojo's summer camp which was over $1500.00 for a lousy babysitting job that did not cover school curriculum as promised. The camp did not teach my daughter karate, they had kids watching kid. One older kid took my daughter into the closet and spanked her WHERE WERE THE ADULTS?? Do not waste your money at this establishment, you would be better off at the YMCA.
Best Karate School Yet!! – My Daughter has been in karate for over 5 years and when we moved here to San Antonio I was worried that I would not find a suitable Dojo for her.
We have been here for about 2 years and it is the best. We had her in the before and after school program which she loves... plus when we pick her up her homework is done!!
The staff and Sensei are great. They cater to Military Families which is always a plus. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
