Editorial Review for Egg – by Karen Hudes

The Scene
An innovative morning timeshare with hot dog joint Sparky's hatched this all-breakfast spot that comforts Williamsburg diners with farm-fresh eats, paper tablecloths and crayons, wait service and country tunes. Prices are a couple bucks less than neighboring brunch places, pleasing early-waking parents with kids, as well as singles who get to loaf until noon.

The Food
Eggs are heartily served, cooked inside brioche, cheddar-topped and sided with crisp bacon and grilled tomatoes, or prepared in various styles with hash browns or grits. The kitchen also plates homemade biscuits in a smooth gravy that's rich with pork sausage, as well as steel-cut oatmeal with cream and dried fruit, and a light homemade granola with Ronnybrook milk or yogurt. Fresh juices and an unusual half-grapefruit topped with caramelized sugar and mint add a citrusy spark, and French-press coffee tops off the morning.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

The eggs are farmed free-range, bacon and sausage come from local Dines Farms, and the brioche is baked at Amy's Bread. Options of veggie sausage and soy milk are also on the menu.

The Extras

Along with coloring on the tables, jars of candies like Chuckles, Pop Rocks and Fun Dip at the counter appeal to retro grown-ups and scampering kids.

When to Go

The restaurant changes over to Sparky's at noon.

My boyfriend and I wandered over to egg around noon one saturday, and we saw there was a large scribble -ridden piece of paper taped to the door where about 50-100 names written on it. About 3/4 were crossed out, and you wonder how this is even legible to anyone, especially when there are 2 "waitresses" and 2 bussers all deciding who gets seated next. (pssst they don't communicate to each other on who they pick next) We then saw this well thought out restaurant plan in action. A waitress walked around the patio and pretty much whispered the next name on the list. OBVIOUSLY the group is not going to hear this small voiced woman in a hungry crowd of about 15 hipsters. She looked around for about 3 seconds, crossed off the name, and went to the next. Now is this at all reasonable or sane? After about getting skipped over 3 times, we said something, and one of the waitresses started getting mad at us! After saying a few calm words back and forth, she passively states "you can take your attitude someplace else!" I'm sorry, but being skipped over 3-4 times, and waiting 2 hours for a brunch that was cold, and tasteless was somehow our fault? If you want a bad brunch experience with extremely rude girls at the helm, by all means, go to egg.

Pros: nice location

Cons: terrible waitresses

Brunch is my favorite meal, period. Sadly, Egg is not the place to get a good one. Slow service, long wait, wobbly chairs, greasy vegetables, bland mushroom gravy, the country ham? dry and tough. Bring your own salt if you have taste buds, otherwise don't bother. However, the coffee was good and I was able to write the next great american novel on the paper tabletop while waiting who knows how long for my food. Very disappointed in ny mag's pick, I wouldn't give this place another try
