Being a transplant from the Northeast U.S., I have been searching for real Italian food on the Northwest side of town since moving to SA in '05. The menu is comprehensive and includes all of my old favorites (Veal Marsala, fried zucchini, calamari, hand-stuffed pastas) and then some. Our server was friendly and helpful without being intrusive. The fried calamari I ordered from the appetizer menu was a little chewy, but the marinara sauce that it came with was right on target -- mild and sweet and seasoned just right. The main dish I ordered was the lunch special: chicken with sun-dried tomatoes in a creamy brandy sauce. Much like the marinara sauce, it was done just right. A tender chicken breast pounded out to about 1/4" thick, cooked to tender perfection, and the sauce was tasty without overpowering the chicken. My companion ordered the other special, which was stuffed rigatoni. It came displayed beautifully on the plate but tasted even better than it looked. Our dessert was the chocolate cake, which was not too sweet but a little on the dry side. Overall, I give Gianni's four stars. Had the calamari been more tender, I would have given it five. I plan to come back with as many friends and family as I can to make sure that this local gem stays put!
New location!. I was SO disappointed when I saw they'd closed, but I found out they're re-opening a brand-new FABULOUS place on 1604 and Bitters. They'll be going by Gianni's Italian Cuisine, so be sure to look for them in the coming weeks. There will be a new menu to try, so I'll be sure to go hungry!
they moved.
this great italian restaunt move 1604and bitter they not open yet
but they sould open soon in dec 2007 the same great food and service
GREAT FOOD, SERVICE, AND AT playMOSPHERE!!!.
I went to Gianni's on a lunch break from school with some friends and I cannot say enough good things about it. The food is mouthwatering and the portions are huge!!! I spent like a week in the gym after my last visit. The chicken is easy to eat and not tough, the marinara sauce is great, and every dish I've had is a 10. The atmosphere is simple, like you can dress up or go casual. The service is nice and quick. My waiter, John, was such a sweetheart with me, answering my like, thousand questions.
PROS: Food, service, PRICE!!!
Cons: I don't like the music they play on the speakers, sorry!
FIRST NEIGHBORHOOD ITALIAN IN SAN ANTONIO. The food was all origanal and HOT, which is rare in San Antonio. The dishes were all origanal and homemade sausage to boot. IN six years living here this was the best neighborhood place we have found by far. They do not yet have a liquer license, but you are welcome to bring your own (they have glasses..we brought our own corkscrew) . We have eaten at some of the most expesive places here and found the food here as good as any. The wait staff is not polished but is very freinly and eager to help.
Genuine Italian. Reasonable prices; authentic food; great variety; it's a must!. I've tried a lot of different Italian restaraunts in SA and this is the first one where finally, it tastes like real Italian food. The menu has the appropriate variety, quality, and atmosphere that really makes it a great experience and the prices are unbelieveable for the quality you get. Don't be fooled just because it's not a chain restaraunt or because of where it's located. If you don't live in the area, it's worth the drive. The main chef is from the New York City area and it reminds me of the wonderful restaraunts I frequented in New York. The staff is friendly and courteous. Give yourself and friends a great treat! Go to Gianni's and save room for dessert!
Authentic Italian Cuisine. The food was excellent and the price was right. They were able to accomodate our party of 23 during lunch. Although it was busy, the staff was friendly with smiles and the service was acceptedly prompt. The dining area is large enough to feel comfortable, yet small enough to get that intimate dining experience. If you like real Italian cuisine and hospitality, Gianni's is the place to go.
You have to try this place!!. My family and I stopped in and we were delighted. The staff is friendly, attentive (but not hovering over the table), and well dressed. The food is delicious and the portions are very generous. Everything was delicious, from the appetizer through the main course and the dessert was a wonderful cap to the meal. It's definitely going to be a regular stop for us!
Great Italian food at a great price. Must TRY!!. This is a new hidden treasure. Went there for my first time about a week ago and followed up with another vist the next day. Family owned and operated. Owner "Joe" is from Italy and really knows how to do a great sauce. My wife and I went and had a full dinner (apps, salad, entree) for under $30 with tip. A great menu with well over 50 different items. Go there for great food and great service. They just opened this year and I say go support this great hidden jewel.
