WORTH THE WAIT.
Not sure about other reviewers' comments - I loved it!
I am originally from Atlanta and have not experienced soul food this good outside of my own kitchen in all of Texas!
I visited the Valley Hi location and ordered the meatloaf, collard greens and mac & cheese. Before I had finished eating my plate I overhead the waitress telling another customer they were already sold out of mac & cheese and meatloaf (before Noon!). The Mac & Cheese and Collard Greens were absolutely delicious and the meatloaf was tasty as well!
I had to pick up a piece of their homemade hot chocolate cake to go - A few hours later when I was less stuffed I tried it and was not disappointed. It was rich and moist and very chocolately!
Westsiders - this is a place you must try! Just get there early because they will sell out of the most popular items! Try it, Try it!
One of the best soul food resturants in town.
I have eaten at the Montgomery locations several times and the food is excellent. The staff was always pleasant, polite and attentive. Compared to Mr. & Mrs. G's the food is expensive, but I also had to consider the location and the overhead costs.
Mama Lee's has the best candied yams in town. The smothered steak was to die for.
I would defintely recommend this resturant to friends. I was shocked at some of the other bad reviews, but that must be the Valley Hi location, because the Montgomery location is excellent.
Very Bad Service. Wow, what a disappointment. This was my 5th visit to Mama Lee's the Montgomery Road location the food was good but the attitude of our server was so bad. There were 4 in our party when the food was served all plates were missing the cornbread (one of our favorites) we ask 3 times for the missing cornbread. The first 2 times we were just ignored the third time were told they were out of cornbread & it would be 15 minutes before it was ready. That would have been acceptable if every plate that was delivered to the tables around us had cornbread on their plate?????? Before we were through with our meal 2 more of our coworkers showed up & sat down at our table, placed their order and sure enough when their food came guess what.....they had cornbread????? So we asked again. As we were getting up to leave here they came with a plate of cornbread. Oh and did I mention what our waitress said "I'm not the cook I don't know where the cornbread is" that remark was uncalled for & rude, we know she wasn't the cook did she think we were stupid? I will not be returning to this eating establishment in the future no matter how good the food is.
Overpriced & not worth it!. I was just at Mama Lee's today for lunch and was extremely disappointed. This was not my first time there. It was my 4th time in the past 2 months and this was the first time I was disappointed in my food but it will be the last time I visit this restaurant...especially after reading the other negative reviews. The guy at the cash register can be rude and seems extremely stingy. I picked up a to go order for myself and 2 other co-workers. When I got the food back to work and we started eating all of our mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese were wayyyy toooo salty. It tasted like someone accidentally dropped a salt shaker in it. It was so gross. The mashed pototoes were also runny and didn't seem home cooked as they are claimed to be. Our fried chicken tasted okay but was very dry. One of my coworkers took a bite of his peach cobbler and ended up spitting it out b/c it tasted like straight sugar. I didn't believe him so I tasted it and I ended up spitting it out too. I ordered a piece of sweet potatoe pie that tasted like straight sugar too. Again, this was the first out of four times that I've had bad food but not the first time I've witnessed bad service. I also saw a sign in there today that the waitresses work for tips only. Is that legal and is it legal to add 18 gratuity to your bill? I didn't know that until I read one of the other posts. I was wondering why my bill today was almost $12.00 and I ordered the fried chicken and piece of sweet potatoe pie. That's a little rediculous for lunch. After reading the post about the owner swearing at a military member I will never go back there again. I am in the Air Force stationed at Lackland and everytime I go in there the entire place is filled with nothing but Air Force personnel from Lackland. To treat a member of the Armed Forces whom you get the majority of your business from is uncalled for and unprofessional. I was so pleased at first but am now disgusted and will never go back.
Absolutely the best Service and food. I have one to the restaraunt off of Walzem twice and each time the owners were pleaseant. They made sure the customers were happy. I had two different waiters and each time they were extremely nice makin sure everything was good. The food IS AWESOME!!! Nothing out of the can and the portions are huge I always have to take some home. never fails. I recommend this restaraunt. The other two reviews seem as if they may be the owners of Mr & Mrs G's. Kinda thoght that was odd. Ask the customers that leave Mama lee's they will tell you,
Decent Food...Unprofessional Owner. I was present on Friday, 6 February and observed what "jgnylander" encountered. I have been with the US Air Force for 16+ years and been in and around San Antonio for about 6 of those years (currently stationed at Lackland AFB). I have been to a lot of dining establishments and never in all my years have I witnessed such unprofessional behavior. This establishment is supposed to be Christian and boasts blessed Soul Food. What a contradiciton! What makes it worse, the owner is prior military which is quite upsetting to me. I have been to Mama Lee's in the past and the food was always pretty decent, but this behavior is unexcusable. I will never again frequent this establishment nor would I recommend it to anyone else. If you want great down home Soul Food where the people (owners) are real and professional try out Mr. and Mrs. G's at 2222 S WW White Rd.
The Food is Good ..... But Not Good Enough To Put Up With That..
On Friday, 6 February 2009 my office went to Mamma Lee?s Soul Food restaurant, at 310 Valley Hi Dr
San Antonio, for a going away luncheon.
At 1054 we arrived at Mamma Lee?s. I noticed that some people were already there and had just gone inside. I decided I should use the rest room before lunch so I walked back to the bathroom. On my way I noticed that the staff was praying over the meal. I thought that was pretty neat. Then I noticed a man shaking his head and mouthing the words, ?get out?. I thought that was a little strange and went into the bathroom.
I was about to lock the door when it opened and a man told me I needed to leave. I said I would as soon as I finished using the bathroom; closing and locking the door. Two seconds later I hear a man telling everyone, ?get out G@# D@#$%#; you need to wait outside until we?re? ?open??. Did I mention the door was unlocked? I heard the front door close and lock and then I heard a male voice say loudly, ?They need to stay the F*#$ out until we?re open? A female voice then said, ?Don?t talk about the customers like that.? The male voice then said, ?I don?t give a F%$# about them, they?re F!@#ing pissing me off.? I washed my hands and left the restaurant letting myself out by unlocking the door myself; closely followed by someone to relock the door.
Why bother praying if you?re going to swear right after and curse about having customers. At 1105 the doors were unlocked by the owner. So I confronted the owner and he told me, ?No one reads the sign and we open at 1100, you can?t walk into any restaurant in the city before they open without being told to leave.? I said, ?you?re a place of business and your door was open, I?m sorry I missed the sign, but your door was open so we came in.? He just wanted to argue. I know that no one in our party will ever go back there. The food is good but it does not justify the treatment we received or the 18% gratuity added to the bill.
Don't act like your customers bother you.
Soul food. I went to Mamma Lee's on friday after work, not only was the customer service good but the food was excellent. I have been in San Antonio for 1 1/2 years and this is the best sould food I have had except of course what I cooked myself. The resturant is off the beaten path but very nice
Editorial Review. Southern-comfort restaurant cooks up all soul food favorites from good, old fried chicken to collard greens and catfish.
