Terrible Service & Sub-Par Food – We experienced horrible service at the Iron Cactus. A few of our dishes were dirty when brought to the table. The margarita was good but the food was aweful. We ordered Carne Asada and it arrived looking more like a cheap steak that had been over-cooked. It was not traditional Carne Asada meat. I wanted to leave within being at this restaurant less than 15 minutes and probably should have.
Poor Customer Services Part 2 – I called the Iron Cactus while walking to The Majestic and spoke to the manager. He tried to tell me he showed up with out dinner as we walked out. Too bad I couldn?t ask Ron White to delay the show another hour so I could eat dinner. I asked the manager why he didn?t come back to the table in 2 minutes as I asked, not the 20 it took he to supposedly took him to plate my food. I also told him I begrudgedly paid my $50.00 tab for 4 drinks and 1 appetizer and asked what he was willing to do to get me to return. He did refund my money.
We managed to get to the show right on time and thank God Ron is as funny as he is. I hardly noticed how starving I was after my dinner of peanuts I got from the bar at The Majestic. Lastly we enjoyed dinner at Taco Cabana at 12:30 and crapped my gut out all Sunday morning. Thanks Iron Cactus for ruining both my Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Poor Customer Service Part 1 – My party walked in the door at 7:45 and had tickets to Ron White?s 10:00 show at the Majestic. We figured we?d have more than enough time to enjoy dinner and a few Ritas. Oh how could I be so wrong?
To start a heterosexual married man sitting with his wife and another married couple might not appreciate a "other than heterosexual" waiter getting within inches of his face while ordering drinks and appetizers, no matter how tolerant he might be. Our drinks and appetizers came and went before our dinner order was taken. Several minutes after the dinner order was taken the waiter showed to refill our water. We had to beg him to take a second order for drinks.
At 9:00 our waiter showed up without our drinks and blamed several large parties for the delay. At 9:15 we still didn?t have our second round of drinks and I couldn?t find our waiter; I even went and tried to walk into the kitchen. After an hour and a half we asked the host and a bartender for help. The host could have given half a sh&t. The only person who seemed to want to help was a bus boy. He ran, tracked down the manager, and brought him to me. Give at man a promotion! Btw, he?s the white guy with a few arm tattoos.
It?s now 9:20 and the show starts in 40 minutes. I told the manager the situation and said if my food is not here in 2 minutes, I need my check. Would you be surprised if I told you that idiot disappeared for 20 minutes? I had to track down our waiter, stand behind him while he took another table?s order, and not so politely asked him to cash me out. And I?m too sure where to place his, but the table next to us sat down 30 minutes after we did. They were finishing their meal during this debacle.
I'm splitting this between 2 reviews due to the length.
What a joke! – What a beautiful restaurant to be so poorly run. The food was medicore, the service was terrible and the margaritas were tolerable. It is just another tourist trap on the riverwalk. I am not even sure this should qualify as mexican food. If you are coming into San Antonio and hoping to taste authentic mexican food - do yourself a favor and go to Rosario's.
Food and drinks do not live up to first impression – The Iron Cactus seemed like a nice place because it has an attractive, trendy look and feel. Our waitress was nice but seemed to be bored with us after a few minutes. The margaritas overall were pretty slow even though the place was fairly empty. The first Margaritas were great on the rocks @ $12.00 a pop. My wife ordered the Carnitas which she is somewhat a coinsurer of. We both thought the Carnitas were very salty and barely enjoyable. I had the fish tacos which I get everywhere I have a chance. The food was hot when it arrived. The fish tacos came with a sauce but were still very bland. On the second round of margaritas we ordered some top shelf and frozen. I've never had a more generic $9.50 margarita. We didn't even finish them. When I informed the manager he didn?t seem surprised or apologetic but he did refund the cost of the drinks. I would not eat here again.
Best "Table Side" Guacamole EVER! – So a group of friends and I are walking the riverwalk and can't figure out which restaurant to eat at. We stumble upon the Iron Cactus. It is located at the end of the river by the WaterMark hotel. It is probably one of the nicest places to eat and they have a really cool bar located in a seperate area from the main restaurant. We decided to go in and order some appetizers. Our waiter suggested the "Table Side" Guacamole. It is made by them right at your table and you can choose all your ingredients. It is so fresh and so fantastic served with their two homemade salsas and chips. The waiter told us about the Cactus Platter so we ordeed that as well and my friend tried the Ceviche...again all were wonderful dishes that we paired with a few margaritas. You should check this place out...the service, food and ambiance were all top notch.
AWESOME FOOD and SERVICE on the RIVERWALK!!! – The Iron Cactus on the Riverwalk is by far one of the best looking restaurants on the river. Elegant lighting, comfortable large booths, clean lines and a southwestern touch of flare. From the moment we walked in I could tell this was going to be a wonderful dining experience. Our server was fantastic. He greeted us with a smile and made some wonderful recommendations.
We started with the table side guacamole and two "Perfect" Margaritas. Fresh chips and homemade salsa (two different kinds) were delivered as we watched our server prepare our guacamole. All fresh ingredients made there right in front of your eyes. Great Presentation!!
After listening to our server's recommendations for dinner I decided to go with the Cacun Snapper (which was topped with loads of sauteed lobster and crab) and my husband decided on the Ancho Chile Rubbed Pork Tenderloin. Both were amazing!!!! We ended the meal with an order of their white chocolate strawberry margarita tres leches---to die for!
I would highly recomend Iron Cactus to anyone who is traveling to San Antonio. I promise you won't be dissappointed!
Tourist Trap- Take your business elsewhere. – My wife and I ended up here based on a local's recommendation. First of all, they made us wait, and when we were finally shown to our table, there were at least 10 open tables. Not sure if this was to make us feel this place was busier than it really was, or if they were understaffed. I ordered the Ceviche and my wife ordered the Tortilla Soup. Both very bland and pretty generic (almost store bought) tasting. The waiter never refilled our waters until we were about to leave. I got silverware delivered to me after my food arrived and my wife never got hers. The waiter complained about working too much and not waiting to get out of there that night. He also bragged loudly about receiving a 20% tip. Very unprofessional and just annoying when you're on vacation.
We figured there was not too much more that could happen to make our dinner below average, so we decided to order the Chocolate Raspberry Diablo. How can you mess up chocolate cake, right? You can ask the chef here how he was able to pull it off. I can say that the best thing about our meal were the raw Raspberries on the cake. You really can't mess that up.
I don't have time to get on these review forums and rant and rave about all the restaurants I go to, but this one deserves a little of my time to warn everyone visiting San Antonio and the Riverwalk.
Worst food and service on the Riverwalk. – Worst service and food we ever received on the Riverwalk. I ordered a club soda, I got a sprite. We ordered a bottle of red wine, we got a bottle of white. Hot appetizer arrived with no forks. By the time we got forks, it was cold. Main meal was tasteless. Don't waste your money at this place!
