Tips for La Siberia Mexican Restaurant

An Authentic "Greasy Spoon" Mexican Restaurant. My friend suggested I try this place that she likes to frequent. A real authentic Mexican restaurant with regional flavor. We walked in around 1 pm on a Friday and the place was about 1/4 full. The waitress brings over a small bowl of chips and two varieties of salsa: a red and a green. I ordered water and my friend ordered lemonade. The menus are large and colorful spiral-bound and laminated with lots of pictures. There is an extensive variety of dishes and plates, as well as a la carte. Here, most of the plates are served with a large bowl of "consomme" which is basically chicken broth with cilantro and rice. It is very good. There are all varieties of enchilada plates, including mole enchiladas and enchiladas suizas. There are also the traditional mexican "tortas" which are basically sandwiches made from dinner rolls. So we decided to order a torta as an appetizer, as well as the choriqueso. Followed by individual plates of enchiladas for each of us. Here is where it gets interesting. The torta and choriqueso came first. The cheese was served in a cast iron skillet which was entirely too hot and the cheese was literally fried. It was served with flour tortillas which was entirely foreign to me. When the waitress brought us small plates to eat off of, my friend was given a plate with dried beans. I noticed the waitress saw the dried crud, but still attempted to pass it off. My companion noticed immediately and asked for another plate. The saving grace was the asada torta which was served with lettuce, avocado and crema. Then the waitress asked if we wanted our soups next, but never bothered to ask if we wanted refills on our drinks, or if we wanted more chips. Then our enchiladas were served and those were very good, served with rice and beans. Four enchiladas to a plate. We were stuffed when we left there, but I don't think I'll go back, unless I order to go. We still left a decent tip because I don't think the waitress had any bad intentions, only naivety and inexperience/ignorance.
