Go to Mad Dogs to drink but NEVER eat here

by CricketFoodie

Mad Dogs is an okay place to have a beer but do not order food. We ordered fish and chips thinking how do you mess up fish and chips at a British pub, right? WRONG! The fish and chips were horrible. Neither my husband or I even touched the chips b/c the looked horrible. My "salad" arrived as a pile of iceburg lettuce with a mound of cheddar cheese. Not good...

Seriously how do you mess up fish and chips at a British Pub???

  • Pros: Right on the river walk.
  • Cons: Aweful food.

Waste of Time

by ccci

Tried to visit Friday July 25/08 about 9:00 pm.

My wife and I are in our mid to late 50's (grandparents).

The 3 'doormen' wanted ID ??

I wasn't carrying mine as we had not gone into town by car but were taking a taxi.

One of these geniuses then proceeds to tell me that "US / Texas Law states that all Canadians / British visitors must carry their passports at all times"; idiotic!!

Went elsewhere.

This place really does not make visitors welcome at all.

Avoid if possible.

cool restaurant by day, Crazy club at night.

by griptape138

This place is a chain and not an authentic san antonio spot by far, BUT, this place really gets going all week. Karaoke during the week, DJ on the weekend, and awesome live music on sundays. Never a dull night. The servers are all dressed in skirts, the guys have kilts, heck, even the security guards are in kilts.

Great atmosphere, pretty good 'meat market' at times, and this drink specials can always bring in a crowd. But beware, this is down town, and you wont get too many drinks over-poured. Over all, its a pretty cool place on the river walk.

  • Pros: Good looking wait staff, cheap cover on weekends
  • Cons: Down town prices, and weak drinks

What a great place to hang out in San Antonio. Offers a little bit of everything - awsome food menu (with great vegan options!), brilliant Saturday night DJ (think his name is Brad?), good looking crowd (and some HOT security guys!)

oh-did I mention the men in kilts??

Girls-if you want some eye candy.......!

  • Pros: Crowded, great music, pool table

Great Pick Up Spot

by barguy69

I have to say I wasn't sure what to think when going out to Mad Dogs. I spent a couple of nights there one weekend and had a grea time. Saturday night it was like a club and the women were everywhere. Sunday was a band and still again the women were everywhere and it must be something about the band but the women were even crazier on that night. All in all if I'm ever "looking", I'm going to Mad Dogs!

  • Pros: Inexpensive, Crowded, Lots of women

A large drink selection and upbeat bands make this watering hole a nice stop on the Riverwalk.

The History
Legend has it that two Scots living in Hong Kong founded the original Mad Dogs British Pub in 1984. A couple of years later they opened another on the Chinese mainland. Oddly enough, in 1995 the San Antonio Riverwalk was graced with Mad Dogs San Antonio. After quickly glancing through the drink menu, it becomes obvious that the Scots' research in regions outside of Texas (gasp) paid off. While purists will be satisfied with Hennessy XO and 18-year-old Macallan, Mad Dogs pours up three types of "orgasms" and other kinky-named cocktails.

The Grub
While haggis (stuffed sheep's stomach) isn't on the menu, most of the food isn't much more appealing than that. Like bar food everywhere, all the entrees are a little more palatable if you start with a drink for an appetizer.

Careful for the 91X

by jalu3

A favorite for IET students, so be warned if you're perminant party or prior service. Besides that, the place isn't bad to have a couple drinks. A lively atmosphere and good service, I would reccomend this to anyone looking to have a good time.

  • Pros: Location, Cost
  • Cons: IET students, Crowded after 2100

Male or female...if you think kilts on the opposite sex are sexy, this is the place for you! Great, friendly bartenders, great drinks, great atmosphere!

  • Pros: right on the river, employee outfits
  • Cons: touristy music, gets crowded at times
