The Best Szechuan Style Chinese Food!!
by rarriaga
This is the best Chinese food that I have tasted in San Antonio. Not your ordinary "fast food" chain restaurants like PF Changs. If you like Szechuan style chinese food this is the place to go. Authentic!!
- Pros: Excellent Food and Service
My Favorite
by JHF
My old favorite chinese restaurant was named Ling's Dragon off of FM78 on the northeast side of town. Unfortunately they closed and I was left without a favorite Chinese restaurant. Until a friend of mine who worked at Ling's recommended this place. It is awesome, my favorite is the spicy shredded chicken. Hsiu Yu has become my favorite Chinese restaurant thanks to the awesome food, great service (they all know me by name) and the great atmosphere. Other good Chinese restaurants are Ding How, Royal Inn, and Peng's Chinatown. Make sure to try one of these four before you go to an overrated place like PF Changs or Formosa Gardens.
- Pros: Great service and great food
- Cons: busy during lunch
Okay but not great

The food was fair if you want average Chinese food but its not "cuisine". I'd recommend PF Changs or Taipei if you are looking for great Asian dining.
- Pros: fried rice, shrimp toast
- Cons: service attention and price value
Friendly neighborhood restaurant with consistently good food
by EvaChasida
Hsui Yu may not be the fanciest nor priciest Chinese restaurant in the '09 zip code, but it's surely the friendliest. Low staff turnover ensures that regulars are recognized and welcomed warmly; small children are treated kindly as well. The food is consistently good and portions are generous. Sunday "brunch" menu includes appetizer, soup and entree at a reasonable price. My highest compliment: the busboys go out of their way to ensure that diners are never without refills, even before they're requested. Nice neighborhood restaurant with solid management and a friendly feel.
- Pros: Friendly staff, prompt seating, good food, fair prices
- Cons: Small dining rooms with closely-placed tables

Absolute favorite Chinese food!
by courtneyfeelscrazy
I have been coming here for years, and it is by far my favorite chinese food anywhere...it makes it hard for me to eat anywhere else! The spicy shredded chicken is to die for, as is the sesame chicken and egg drop soup! Service is great, nice atmosphere....Highly recommended! Lunch specials change each day and are served quickly. Try it!
Chinese food that can be had again and again
by teju666
This is not a run of your mill Chinese place. The menu is varied with good selection of different kinds of meat, poultry & seafood. The place is a little dimly lit but cozy. The service is pretty good. Sea food preparations normally take a little longer but I got excellent service for my order of shrimp.
The price is slightly on the higher side but I do not mind paying more to avoid the greasy chinese food that is dished elsewhere.
- Pros: Good service, ample parking, good menu
- Cons: A little pricey
Best Chinese!!

This is truly the best chinese food in San Antonio. The service is always wonderful! All of the dishes I have tried here are wonderful. The recent addition of crab ragoon as an appetizer has become one of my new favorites. I recommend the egg drop soup, crab rangoons or egg rolls to start. As an entree, the spicy shredded chicken, sesame chicken or chicken chow mein are all good choice. Don't forget the shrimp fried rice (no peas for me). Their fried rice is truly the best. You won't be sorry when you dine here.
Families, dragons and reliable egg drop soup. Just what you want in a friendly neighborhood Chinese restaurant.

The Scene
You know you've walked into a gem of a local restaurant when the hostess knows the names of half the patrons. Visited by families and decorated in the classic dragons-and-Buddha style of Chinese restaurants, Hsiu Yu is a delightful spot for an above-average dinner. Begin your meal with an egg roll or a bowl of egg drop soup and you'll learn why so many locals keep coming back.
The Food
Leave the gourmet-fusion Chinese cuisine to experimental upscale restaurants; Chef Chung Lien Yu sticks to a traditional Chinese menu. His sesame chicken is lightly fried and laced with the perfect amount of ginger. The number of flavorful vegetarian dishes exceeds the usual. For admirers of sweet-and-sour meats, spicy veggies and cold Tsing Tao beer to wash it down, Hsiu Yu is the place to go for a solid meal.
