Taipei is one of mine and my husbands husbands favorite restaurants. We've made it a special place for just the two of us to have dinner on "Date" night. The services is wonderful, the food it fabulous. We highly reccommend Taipei.

Good Food - Horrible Smell

by SarahKay

The back room of the restaurant smelled like urine. It must have been a lot of urine because it was a very strong stench. The restaurant must have known, because they had a Glade Plug-in.

The food was good. I recommend the Orange Chicken. It was delicious. The egg rolls are not worth the money.

Go on a Tuesday night when they have half off dinners.

  • Pros: Good Food, good specials
  • Cons: Smelled like urine!!!!

Pretty decent place...

by babylonboots

I have visited Tai Pei on many occasions and have never had a bad experience. The food is a bit pricey, but they usually have good dinner specials going on. The waitstaff is pretty friendly and there is an entire wall of windows so there is plenty of light. It has always been tidy, although on Tuesday nights, when all items are half off and the people are flying in and out, it's not quite up to par. I would recommend their egg drop soup, lemon chicken and mongolian beef. Don't get anything in the black bean sauce or the lobster sauce, as they taste a bit off. They are also vegetarian friendly, as one can substitute tofu for any meat dishes, and there is also a no MSG option. And in response to a previous review, I don't even think the waitstaff get cigarette breaks.

What a dump

by jesusson

On several occasions I have had the miss fortune of having to meet friends or family in this establishment, on one such occasion the smell of dead animal was so prevalent I did not even venture past the host?s stand. Out of the eight or nine times I have been forced to visit Taipei I have seen those little brown creatures your get when you don't clean food up off the floor (apparently the name of this creatures is an inappropriate word on citysearch) dirty silverware and glasses. Do yourself a favor and go right behind Taipei and eat at China Inn the food is better and you will not run the risk of getting sick.

  • Pros: There are no pros I can think of for this dirty establishment
  • Cons: I have seen chicken on the floor of their walk in and cook staff retune to work from smoke breaks or trips to their cars with out washing their hands.

Mediocre food, poor service, rude management

by smitty17

We found Taipei's menu to be a very watered down version of Chinese food and very disappointing. The place could have been cleaner. The owner/manager has issues and should be in another line of work.

Awful service and average food.

by moorelace

We saw the good rating for this restaurant and unfortunately it did not live up to hype. The service was horrible for one. The food was ok but not for the prices. Also, the plate that the restaurant is famous for (firecracker chicken) is not even offered on the lunch menu. All in all I would definately recommend finding another chinese restaurnant. Formosa Garden is terrific!

Great

by dons

Taipei is one of the best run Chinese restauants in the city. Excellent service, excellent atmosphere and excellent food/presentation. Not your typical run of the mill tourist joint by any means. Locals come from near and far for a taste of true quality.

  • Pros: food, service, quality
  • Cons: parking

Good food and a pleasant atmosphere make this place a popular choice with San Antonians.

The Scene
Taipei is one of the best liked Chinese restaurants in the city, at least according to readers polls found in nearly every local and regional publication. Perhaps this is due to the fact that it's one of the few fairly upscale Chinese establishments. Or maybe it's because of the reasonable prices. Or maybe just because the food is good.

Taipei is a surprisingly classy joint. Which isn't to say it's fancy--most patrons are clad in jeans and shorts. But there's something about the sunny wall of windows during the day and the romantically lit dining area in the evening that makes the space seem, well, nice.

The Food
The food is the same--nothing fancy, but pretty good nonetheless. Menu standouts include the sizzling, spicy firecracker chicken and the tender Hunan style shrimp and scallops. Don't miss out on the Triple Delight, a great way to try beef, shrimp and chicken in one fell swoop.
