wonderful sushi experiance

by ravingredhead

over the past year and a half my husband and i have spent a great deal of time at the restraunt downtown and have NO bad experiances. there was a particular manager who might i ad is is no longer there that made the experiance a little less enjoyable but never as terrible as written by some of the other commentators. I'm sorry to say it folks but never have your expectations set too high at ANY restraunt, you're going to get your heart broken. Also the attitude that you project is going to affect the service you get, no one wants to wait on a snotty know-it all...sorry it had to be said, i'm a waitress. Also, in coming to a southern state in search of quality sushi, please realize there are going to be ingredients supplemented to suit the locals, not all business is strictly sushi experts. Anyways! The restraunt is fantastic. The servers are hospitable, funny, and attentive. the back of the house crew is prompt, and although not ":authentic" japanese chefs at the downtown location, they are incredible weilding a knife of that proportion with such skill and training, and if you're still not satisfied have a chat with either of the managers and i promise you'll have a smile on your face by the time you walk out of the door. Thank you for your time folks, enjoy the wonders of downtown SA!

  • Pros: food, service, atmosphere

Absolute Horrible Service

by XIE

My friends and i came to San Antonio for a vacation, we asked our hotel staff what's a good sushi restaurant around here and she recommended Sushi Zushi. So we came here to give it a try. First walked in, we didnt know if we were suppose to seat ourselves or wait?...looked around if there are any host or hostess...none...waited for like a minute then we just sat ourselves..

The Menu was HUGE..there was a lot of sushi that wasn't much different from each other..

When we got our food it was mediocre...nothing great about it...my friend didnt get his food yet...and everyone else did...and i asked our server where is his food...he said it's coming right now...all my friend order was a sashimi assortment..which should be the easiest and fastest to come out...he waited another 10 minute for it..then it FINALLY came out. My other friends and i already finished our food when his food just came out. And on top of that, he got my other friend order wrong..but she said it's okay.

It was a horrible experience...we just paid the bill and hurriedly left the place. Never are we going back there again.

Sushi Zushi is certainly not for the connoisseur.

by ahlpants

If you enjoy traditional Japanese ambiance and affair this is certainly NOT the establishment for you.

The menu was over bearing and confused. The restaurant has the atmosphere of your standard fusion. But there was nothing fused to it. Just blaring industrial music, non-Asian cooking staff. (Including the "Chef") Rude waiters and most discouraging no pre-meal beans.

If you know the difference between Sashimi and Sushi, skip Sushu Zushi.

Note: This is all my opinion based off my personal dining experience at Sushi Zushi.

  • Pros: Hopefully there are better Japanese restaurants in San Antonio.
  • Cons: Sushi Menu and Dinner Menu Smashed together in one, poor ambiance, rude staff, soggy noodles. Dry Rice.

OVERRATED - Average Sushi and TERRIBLE SERVICE

by sarahpioquinto

I love sushi and I love to try new places all the time. I've lived in Austin and Houston, and I've always wished that San Antonio had more sushi offerings. I went to Sushi Zushi expecting similar quality to some of the upscale places I've tried. The best thing about my trip was probably the hostess as she was the only one who paid attention to our party. After being seated, we waited 15 minutes for WATER and another 15 minutes for our waitress to finally show up. I almost got up and left because the restaurant was relatively empty. The waitress acted as if we were wasting HER time and did not even know anything about the menu. Several other waiters and waitresses passed by and noticed us just sitting there and didn't bother to ask if we'd been helped. Regardless, we ordered anyway because we felt like we owed it to the time we spent waiting. When the sushi was brought out, I was terribly disappointed. At their price point, I expected fresher fish and better quality preparation. The eel was overcooked, and the salmon sashimi tasted old. While Sushi Zushi seems like a trendy sushi spot, it definitely did NOT meet my expectations.

  • Pros: None worthy of writing down
  • Cons: Service, overpriced, quality

Other than TAO in Vegas, the ONLY place I ever eat Sushi!

by lovelydarling

I've tried a variety of different Sushi restaurants here in San Antonio, all unsavory - But the first time I went to Sushi Zushi on E. Basse, I fell inlove. The service is wonderful, waiters and waitresses are very friendly, polite and attentive. I'm only a fan of Maki-Zushi, so it's rare the time that I order otherwise - The LIR Roll, Spurs Roll, Las Vegas Roll, Spicy Salmon/Tuna/Crab Rolls - MY FAVORITES, among others. It is ALWAYS clean, bathrooms are spotless. I don't know where the critics that previously submitted their reviews ate at, but it was definetly not the one on E. Basse. I highly recommend Sushi Zushi on E. Basse - It has now become my FAVORITE restaurant in San Antonio!

  • Pros: Delicious food, wonderful service - worth every penny!

avoid th is place!

by glovid

Horrible sushi and horrible serivce!!! The fish is POOR QUALITY, food that was supposed to be hot was really cold, greasy and flavorless. The waiter (Mike) clearly did not know ANYTHING about the food he was 'serving' and is either REALLY stupid or had an attitude. This dump also charges the same prices for sushi that you would pay in a quality sushi restaurant in SanFrancisco

  • Pros: desperately needs new management or to close down

Do not take a "sushi virgin" here!

by reemy411

My fiance and I are self-proclaimed sushi experts-no thanks to Sushi Zushi. This was the place I tried sushi for the 1st time 4 years ago, and I thought I hated sushi. They use too much cream cheese in the rolls, the fish freshness is sketchy, and it is far from authentic. If you want truly amazing sushi, go to Yokonyu downtown or, for a little less money, go to Koi Kawa on Broadway.

  • Pros: There are other sushi restaurants in town
  • Cons: There is more than one location

Not really good

by z3power

This review is for BOTH locations (1604 & IH-10).

Food was okay - not authentic and not always served at correct temperatures.

Service was spotty - even when the area is less than 1/2 full.

Cleanniness is below average too - the resturant on IH-10 is showing it's age, furniture is chipping, and dust on a lot of the ledges.

I could not recommend either place for my friends or family.

  • Pros: Different look and test for serving sushi
  • Cons: Loud, not very clean, spotty service

Lousy excuse for Japanese food.

by wpitt

Japanese food is difficult to find in San Antonio, and Sushi Zushi isn't the place to try. I've been visiting Japan for the past 12 years, and I've never eaten food this bad in all my travels. This restaurant doesn't even use the right variety of rice. Their tempura is disgraceful. To top it off, it's expensive. Save your money and your tastebuds.

  • Cons: Expensive, tasteless.
